Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Have any reps suggested that offroading IS the cause? The rep looking over mine today insinuated it went "offroad" by my lift and bigger tires. He even took pictures! LOL I have a stock suspension and 265 70 17 tires. These are the geniuses calling the shots on this issue! I am very pissed after today. They even refuse to give me my FJ back.

That kind of dealer attitude is endlessly frustrating. You should probably avoid this dealer and find one more offroad friendly in your area.

Where can I get a copy of this "acknowledgement"?
The "acknowledgment" comes in the form of Toyota authorizing all the repairs in this thread, in spite of all the after-market modifications that virtually every one these repair-authorized FJ has. If they didn't acknowledge it, that would've been their very easy excuse for not authorizing or performing the work.

Well, for one, at least, you can read through all of these posts and find the one where I relate that that was what I was told by my local service manager, who indicated that it also came from the regional Toyota technical rep, after both of them had my car for a day or two to go over - with LOTS of mods in place. Then you can print out that post, if you really need a hard copy.
X2. Again, if Toyota concluded that the bulging/ripping problem was the result of after-market mods, they wouldn't be acknowledging the fact that the two are completely unrelated.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

I called Toyota USA today to get an update regarding this issue and to see if a TSB had been issued yet. The resp. I spoke to put me on hold for quite some time, then came back online and told me that a TSB had been issued to cover the 3/36 warranty period. He gave me the TSB number which I left at work (I will post the TSB number on there tomorrow). I asked him what Toyota's plan was for those of us that are not yet affected with this problem. I was told it would be case by case with the dealer, but the fact that a TSB has been issued recognizing that there was a problem would help anyone outside of warranty make thier case. He did not know of any recall that was in works for this. I dont know if i should pray for bulges/rips in the next two years or not Good news for those that already have them though (they will be covered). Again dont flame me to bad, I will provide the TSB number tomorrow I promise.

During the investigation of my bulges, first thing Toyota asked if 1. if there were any suspension mods, 2. what type of driving has this guy done, and 3. what size are his tires. They are definitely trying to pawn it off on "mods". Not sure what the outcome will be, but since I am stock, I am not too worried. Just would love to get my ride back.
Toyota advertises the FJC with ads showing lifted FJs with ARB bumpers, they can in no way blame the mods, a good lawyer can rip that one to pieces in his opening statement, Mod all you like, they have touted to the world that you can first time they took a picture of one of the trail teams trucks modded.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

As far as what happened to my FJC, During the repair process, it seems they discovered that they need to remove the dash board so no hot sparks get under it and it catches fire.
My rig was burnt to a position where 4 different appraisers said it was a total.
Why? because they tried to save labor by not having the dash removed as a safety procedure.
Then it turned into a 6 week affair what started as civil discussion to Me being at the edge of having to file several lawsuit's before they finally settled.
why? Because Toyota refused to accept liability, they kept putting it off to the Sub Contractor they were using. I had brought it to Toyota at Toyota's request, however they suddenly forgot all when it burnt up and started a legal dodge ball game till they were forced up to the wall.
I will warn anyone getting the work done, to make sure the dash is removed before welding starts. I will warn anyone who is thinking about buying a FJC to hold off till they find the problem, I have seen 2008 models (they were putting in 2008 fender skirts in mine) budging already. IF I owned a 2007 or 2008 I would be screaming to the feds as loud as I could, and contacting every consumer advocate that was in my vocal range. this problem is getting out of hand in the amount of time it is taking to fix. Someone is doing the softshoe all over everyones resale value the longer this takes.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Finally some movement! I am entitled to a rental vehicle covered by Toyota. They apparently have a brace for the inner apron but it isn't in production yet. BS or not, at least I have some sort of wheels again.

The number doesn't seem to "verify/run" on the TSB database.. Ron

I did read most of the thread before buying a used FJ in December of last year and I did see posts describing TMC authorization. I don't have body rips problem (knock x 3), but if I print out the posts and show them to the dealer it would be the same as "some guy said that mods don't affect this problem". Sorry for being a snob, but (most) dealers don't take what is said in this forum as an official word from TMC. I am looking for an official document with TMC logo on it. Hopefully we can get out hands on that TSB...
