Wow, I have been missing out on some pretty good finger pointing lately. I just caught back up on this thread and it is completely understandable to be upset with Toyota for how they have treated some of us with this issue. I too have given up fighting with them and will drive my rig until my fenders fall off and then I will tie a rope to them and drag them behind me until there is nothing left. I will never buy or refer anyone ever again to Toyota. Who loses then?

Brian, you rock.
As for the rest of you, you don't. Just kidding. I just wanted to repost that I did win arbitration and the arbitrator did rule that the fender tears are due to a manufacturing defect and my FJ is modded. My rig goes in for new generation aprons next week. You can win and get your rig fixed by jumping through the hoops, or you can adopt Brian's mentality, cease caring, and never patronize Toyota again. Either way you can have piece of mind. All this bickering in the middle just seems like wasted energy.

Here are some fender tear resources. I hope you find them useful. Please file complaints with your state attorney general and with the NHTSA. Lets make it impossible for Toyota to ignore this plague. http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...resources.html

Who loses then? Buy a Ford, Chevrolet, Jeep or other... Sorry, you still loose!
I just bought a 09 FJ (8/08 build date) and I see this post while cruising around the forum. I like the vehicle, even with it's not so major quirks, and was looking for the long trouble-free life I have always heard about Toyota. I have two Jeeps (Wrangler and Grand Cherokee) and have had no problems (200k and 147k). I didn't want to have two Cherokees but the Wrangler doesn't have the towing capacity of the FJ. Truth be told I just like the FJ look as well.
Now the fender apron nonsense raises it's head. I am not a bolder climbing, doon jumping 4 wheeler, but I do like to go off road and have some fun. By the look of my inner apron, it appears to look like the gen 2 version by sight, at least from the pictures I have seen posted. No idea if there is any beefing up behind what you can see.
I truly hope this issue is dealt with honorably and that those that deserve it get their vehicles repaired to their satisfaction. I don't like to disparage companies for things out of their control or that could not have been reasonably forseen, but Toyota appears to have known about this for some time and must stand behind the product they marketed and sold as a serious off-road contender. Not doing so, is just wrong.
If anything happens to my fender aprons I will surely post it hear.
Just a thought before I go. How hard would it be to simply jack a few vehicles off the assembly line and do a logical stepwise experiment where the truck is put through constantly more rigorous conditions to see what causes the apron to fail? Modifications, no modifications, whatever. Seems simple to me.

Relax, take a deep breath. Let me give you some insight as to what’s going on. I was one of the first to have inner fender apron problems. Toyota treated me fairly and made it right. I'm not going into details as I've done that many times. What I want to add is there are some on this forum that think the sky is falling and they want you to believe it too. If you have an 2009 FJ, it also has the redesigned fender. The redesigned fender was in production in July 2008. I have the redesigned fender on my second FJ and there have been no problems at all! And yes I wheel my FJ.

I have the 3rd gen fenders and the drivers side is starting to show signs of the problem again. They were installed in December. I am starting to wonder if the install might have something to do with the recurrence.

IMO its hard to say relax to those who have gone 36K miles on their FJ (stock or modified) that Toyota has denied repair (the extended warranty btw does NOT cover this fender apron issue as an FYI). These FJ owners then have to result on litigation/arbitration while stuck having a $6-10K repair bill in which TMC should have learned from Prado since 2003.
i have an 07 and just bought a lift and tires, i have NOT installed them yet, my passenger side is bulging, i was thinking that i would go this week and get the claim started and all, then i would go ahead and lift and tires even if the repairs were not complete yet, some have advised me to just hold off on the lift and tires till the fende issue for mine is repaired and done, what do you think?
