Engine Bay Body Rips-COMMITTED!

Well, the parts are "in" from Toyota...I'm committed now...just at 33-k miles.
Even though I just have small tears/bulges, I'm gonna have the whole front end ripped up...maybe I can get an alignment out of this mess!

Can wait to see the new tin panels and whatever "brace" they came up with (20 cents worth of more tin)...

Should bought an old FJ-40 and spent the xtra $$ restoring it...

IMO its hard to say relax to those who have gone 36K miles on their FJ (stock or modified) that Toyota has denied repair (the extended warranty btw does NOT cover this fender apron issue as an FYI)
Yup-Specifically does not cover "sheet metal". Especially the "thin tin" car manufacturers use there days...

Just feel like whining about my first experience owning a Toyota (which has been totally enjoyable except for this MAJOR DESIGN FLAW)!

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

I think I would hold off awhile and it will take the MODS out of their argument. If you add it, it will be the first thing they blame.

i have an 07 and just bought a lift and tires, i have NOT installed them yet, my passenger side is bulging, i was thinking that i would go this week and get the claim started and all, then i would go ahead and lift and tires even if the repairs were not complete yet, some have advised me to just hold off on the lift and tires till the fende issue for mine is repaired and done, what do you think?

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Hi folks, on the subject of bulges, tears & cracks a question comes to mind. Whether you drive your FJ’s on neighborhood streets, at the beach, bogs or boulder trails… It would be nice to hear if there’s been some such problems with 2009 FJ models. I’m new to this development of problems & would like to know if I should be scared of buying a Brand New 2009 model. Thanks all of you for your posts & would much appreciate any comment on this problem. Mike

Note regarding approved repairs & mods

So as I wait for my rig to be done and returned to me, I thought I'd mention something that might affect some of you, but probably not MOST of you.

I have a URD (i.e., non Toyota TRD) supercharger installed, and its plumbing & piping was something the people doing the repair (an authorized bodyshop next to my dealer who they use for bodywork and who have done this particular repair previously) weren't willing to take responsibility for removing themselves, given the complexity of the plumbing and various components.

I should note that Toyota IS paying the body shop for the labor to remove other mods (front bumper & winch, for instance), but they felt that the SC was something they were unwiling to take responsibility for, particularly since it wasn't a TRD model.

After a bit of hissy-fitting, I realied that this was actually quite a resonable position from both the dealer's and bodyshop's position, so I ended up paying for the removal & replacement of the SC gear, even though the rest of the repair is being fully warranteed. In retrospect, I think is is entirely fair.

I'm also lucky that the person who originally did the SC install is a (literal) stone's throw from the bodyshop, was available (within 10 minutes, if you can believe that...and if you know him, you probably can't...), and had the stuff moved so that the body shop could start their curring & welding very quickly.

Just a bit more information for this 3000+ post pile of info.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

They told me the same thing, any mods that have to be removed will be at my expense. Waiting until after Cruise Moab, then I will get with the body shop to fine out which mods need to be removed and I will probably do it myself. Only thing is the TRD SC, I hear it needs to be removed, I will probably let the shop do that so my warranty stays intact.
