And it looks like you have the "early" fender style. 'renderit' and 'FloJo' both report 1/07 build dates with the new fender style (posts #606 and #607), so Toyota must have changed over to the new fender design in December '06 or January '07. Does anyone with a newer fender design have a bulge or tear? It would be very interesting if they made a mid-model-year design change -- it would certainly indicate to me that they knew they had a problem.

I do not know if it is documented by Toyota, I have an 07 unsure of the month and as of to date do not have this issue 2300 miles. but I did see earlier post with pics that show a difference in the inner fender wells.
just a question... was not sure if this has been indentified.
thanks,

OK gents, took a pic...normal or not? As you can see, its not perfect, but no idea if its always been that way or not. Note, the drivers side is similar, but a smaller gap. Are we counting this as a bulge? I wouldn't have noticed without the ruler.
I would say "no, not normal" after putting a straight edge to mine and it is pretty damned straight.
Ok guys, I checked and checked all the pics again and I think there IS A DIFFERENCE between FJs. Here is the pic of mine that is different from the other MT from the "pics only" thread. Look it has two more holes and four more weld spots, probably to reinforce or probably to absorb some forces through the holes. I think that this is a improved design of the inner fenders from the previous models.
So the first picture is from SAVVYAV and the second is mine. Both same side, Manual Transmissions, etc.
Take a good look and let us know what you think.
JP
Is this is true Toyota knew and needs to repair now all the old ones. $$$$$$
Dat be mine ya, fer sure... I have a first run build (purchased April 1st 06) so seems mine was made from rocks and wood. Annoyed with the fact I have to stick my feet thru floor board and run to get it going...stopping not fun either. Oh, and the bird I would squeeze to activate my horn...died. I didin't feed him, so not covered under warrenty!
Yabba dabba dooo!!!!
Oh, and since I have 35"s and most of the plastic trim under fender is either trimmed, or GONE. Not sure I will get front of the line service on this fix for free....eh

just took a look at my fenders... my driver side fender looks the same as the fender in post 605... but my passenger side fender does not have the additional holes.
And your build date is? And you do or do not have bulging/tearing?

Good evening to all, My neck hurts after reading this, but I feel compelled to add my thoughts. I don’t think this poll or any other is going to resolve this issue. If every FJ owner on this forum responded to a poll, any poll, it would only tell you there’s a problem, we know that now!
Theirs enough speculation here for a “good who done it”, but not much else. So lets dispense with the speculation about bumpers, skid plates, lifts…etc. Doc and others have given good examples of the forces needed to cause such damage. Good job to those who have reasoned through the problem. Reps on the way!
Toyota is really the only entity that has the resources and vested interest to solve this issue, lets let them do that! I’m not speaking out my @#$#$@! I had a bulge on the driver’s side, but nothing like what I’ve seen here. NO, I had a bulge that needed no ruler or any other device to see. It was that obvious! The “bulges” I’m seeing here are normal variations in manufacturing. I checked 5 new FJ’s for comparison when I found my problem. The Toyota rep looked at my FJ for nearly an hour. He examined to many places to mention. He asked about all the mods (see below for mods). I had scraped skid plates and desert pin-stripping too. Yes I wheel my FJ, sometimes hard! I NEVER TOOK PICS, THERE WAS NO NEED, Toyota fixed the problem. The inner fender well was replaced, end of story!
If this is an engineering problem then its in Toyotas interest to fix it, and I believe they will. Bad press will not sell FJ’s and Toyota knows it! My sympathy to those who have this problem. My hope is that it will be resolved in a timely manner, but I think it will be several months before anything definitive happens.
PS: No cracks… yet!
PSS: The Toyota rep never identified the cause of the bulge.

Hey I think I saw you at Superstition Toyota... was that the dealer that fixed it or did you go somewhere else?
