I'm not disagreeing with any of that, Larry. But I think it is obviously incorrect to characterize this as a minor problem. It's not a minor problem when sheet metal starts to rip on a line of trucks that haven't even been in the field for two years. Yes, I think Toyota will step up the plate. I only hope it isn't a fundamental design issue. But it strikes me as fanboish to keep saying this is minor.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. While I do not enjoy the site of cracks in my inner fenders, they are not attached to the frame, not directly responsible for the support of any major/ critical componentry, and pose no immediate safety hazard to myself, and they are easily visible for monitoring the progress of the symptoms. So, IMO, while it is an important issue, and must be corrected, it is a minor problem. Having a fuel system shut off randomly, having a steering component subject to premature failure, having a brake system malfunction , these are problems that directly affect my safety and that of those who drive near me, and I would classify an issue involving any of those systems a "major" problem.

That being said, should Toyota choose not to correct / repair the problem, or should it be determined that this situation does affect the safe operation of the vehicle, I will immediately change my tune...

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Holy crap, took about 5 hours of reading. Anyways, no bulges/cracks here.. yet, but then again, I never drove it off road, but do live in crappy NYC road condition.

It was purchased June 06.

Still keep on eye on it. As you probably picked up from reading this entire thread, this is not necessarily an offroad-created problem.

Wow!!! The brick would be my last choice... Possibly followed by that LCSteve color... ha ha

Titanium rules!!! No cracks (yet)

Thanks for the support guys, lol. The sandstorm would be great for a modded FJ, though.

Exclamation Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Not sure how well these will look without a point of reference as there isn't a crack yet but there is a noticeable and palpable bulge. 14,000 miles, 80% on road, very light off-roading.

Passengers side is fine, nice and straight:

Driver's side on the other hand:

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

9.5K miles, no cracks or bulging.

OME 3" 886 up front, 895 back aft.
ARB front bumper with Warn XD9000 winch.

Have taken it off road about 5 times so far.

Build date was late June of '06.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

The "Harmonic Vibration" theory is very interesting, but again, my rig seems to be the exception here.

3/06 build date.

38,500 miles

Loads of highway miles (Moab twice - Ouray - 70 miles SoCal Freeway roundtrip to work)

Lots of off-road (although nothing more than Moderate - Annza Borrego, Big Bear, Ouray, Azusa, LA/OC local stuff).

Again, I am very surprised I'm not seeing bulges and cracks on my FJ.

Maybe I'm just not seeing them (liKe Doc suggested).

I have the gang check it out at the next SoCal event.
