I got a call this morning from my toyota dealership. my service rep told me to come down and drop off my truck so that it can be repaired. he said the sooner i got it in the better because toyota wants to look at it.
so now my truck is currently in the shop being repaired. toyota is covering the costs of the repair and the cost of my rental (chrysler minivan ). they will be removing the entire panel and replacing it completely.
no eta on when i will get it back, but i know from personal experiences to not rush body shops.
toyota is watching this repair very closely. my guess is that they will take my panel and use that for some r&d to figure out what is going on.
there is light at the end of this tunnel, and for most of us it will be coming even sooner than you think.
i might be able to get some pics of the truck while it is being repaired. i dont know if the repairs will be done at the dealership's body shop or at toyota the toyota headquarters.
I think it's great that they're replacing the panel, but I'm not so sure I'd be thrilled about them fixing it before they determined what the cause was. Just my opinion, but if they find out they need to redesign those fender panels then won't they just have to replace it again at a later date?

Yeah, but it's cheaper than buying the truck back to get the panels so they can tear them apart. I'd be a little concerned about this as well, but I think they're not at the point where they are going to buy the truck back.

Great news but I hope the fix doesn't involve removing the engine block. Vehicles just aren't the same once American mechanics start playing with that stuff.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips
I guess I just have one of the best service writers I've ever come across. and I've had over 8 new cars in the last 5 years. it also helps that the dealership has a very good relationship with corporate.

I just scoped out the engine bay with a straight edge.. sure enough I've got a minor bulge on the passengers side.
I'd like to show this to my local dealer before it becomes anything serious... But, I'm pretty sure they'll laugh at me for it being a minor detail unless I can show them some of the problems others are having..
Those of you who have gotten this issue recorded at the dealer, do you know if they log it under a specific issue # or something? Is there a way they can search a database to display all the other issues?
