Metal banging over road bumps.

Greetings to all.

Newbie here. I just got a black 2007 FJ. My first SUV. I'm pretty impressed with the power and handling. Anyway, I just noticed that when I go over bumps on the road/ (small) speed bumps, I hear a banging noise under my truck--- metal to metal. Has anybody experienced this. Is this normal? Or just a characteristic of the FJ being a truck? I checked my roof rack, tags, and exhaust heat sheilds and they are all tightly bolt on.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mine does that also. It depends on the road though. It did it before my lift and after the lift. It feels like it's right under the drivers side floorboard. I know it is also not the door because that is a different sound. I've gotten underneath and looked but saw nothing.

Re: Metal banging over road bumps.

Mine did the same thing when driving over quick bumps and dips. Bang on the stock front skid plates with your fist, and rattle or clunk noise? Mine did, I removed the front skids and re-installed, noise was gone.

Re: Metal banging over road bumps.

I have the Man-a-fre skid, maybe I'll take it off and see if the noise disappears. It could be flexing ever so slightly while going over a rough road. Thanks for the suggestion RMGST and Trailbus.

I know my rear links make noise from time to time.

I too have the MAF skids...they need to tightened after almost every run...
as far as the new guy...same thing...check the skids for tightness

Re: Metal banging over road bumps.

Thanks for the response! RMGST, that's exactly when I hear the noise --"quick dips and bumps"!!!! It really depends on the bump. Haha! I already checked the front skid plates and it's not the culprit. Anyway, I don't hear the noise when the windows are up. Thanks again!

Re: Metal banging over road bumps.

Mine was rocks sitting on the OEM front skid. Solution was to remove the OEM front skid, which was bent anyway (on account of coming into strong contact with a gust of warm air).

Re: Metal banging over road bumps.

Yep, I would check the skid plate(s) first. Mine were rattling as well.

ALso, do you have an afermarket bumper?? The source of my new clunking is the Warn winch bumper brackets clanking against the frame. (BTW, Warn is sending out newly designed brackets as a fix.)
