Oh, no. I'm still angry that Toyota is not standing behind their product. Just quietly gathering data and trying to figure out the best tactics to move forward.
I'm seriously considering parking my FJ and driving my piece-of-S@#T Ford.
I wonder how many diffs they busted while trying to take all these photos.
Funny enough, I'm driving a ford while the FJ is down...
I wonder how many broken diff it's gonna take?
And why is it that the dealers can be so nasty to their customer just because they don't understand what they're selling??
1) They advertise this as an offroad vehicle, in the "landcruiser heritage". What this means to everyone is dependability. I plan on doing many trips solo (yes, don't give me the speech, if you want to come with, just PM me) and knowing of an inherent manufacturing problem is not something I want in the back of my head. Esp when it's a part of this magnitude.
2) From an engineering design point, (and the "you offroaded it, and abused it" concept) the drive train should be able to handle anything we can put it through. If I bought a new tundra, and exceeded the towing capacity by 10% and blew out a rear diff, how could they tell I abused it? But our FJ's have mud and scrapes underneath them, so they just use that card. ALSO, from an engineering standpoint, you try to design stuff to break at the easiest to replace/least costly point. The front CV's SHOULD break before the front diff, easier to replace. Your lugnuts should be made of softer metal than the wheel studs, so if you over tighten, guess what? the lug's strip, you only have to replace one, not the drum/rotor, etc. Oil pans, yes, the plug should be softer than the threads on the pan ( I question those here that stripped the oil pan... um, try screwing it in by hand.).
So, if the rear diff goes out, it is either a design flaw, or a manufacturing flaw (covered by warrantee). Something else should give first, like tire grip, or the clutch(slippage). NOT the ring gear.
One needs to ask the Toyota tech that labels it 'abuse'... "How did I abuse it?
Too much clutch, too much gas, too much what?.. PROVE IT".
Good luck with this. esp when many posted that they changed metal after a certain date.
When did your diff go Sylvain? Call my lawyer at 404-304-4545, sue them as well. If you don't want to go that far, Toyota has an arbitration firm they go through for free, look in the books that came with your FJ and there is one called "Warranty Information." There's a form in there you fill out and mail to the arbitration firm. As for moving my truck, I was there last Wednesday and told them to order the part and fix it. If they're *****ing about it being there they can kiss my ass. Maybe we should protest at Toyota Mall of Georgia instead of Milton Martin. Mall of Georgia is the biggest volume dealer in the state. If we get some media coverage and stop them from selling any cars on a Saturday, I bet you they will call Toyota and a bulletin will be sent out pretty quick. Anyone know anything about protesting?
Does anyone know...are ALL early builds subject to this problem, or only some? 03/06 build date.
Just as with the fender panels, I haven't had a problem, but I'm nearing 36K. Would Toyota replace the diff knowing that it is defective, even if it hasn't shown a problem yet?

I was told the diff is part of the 5 year/ 60000 mile powertrain warranty. I am worried about mine too. 03/06 build.

Thanks Gary,
Just like you did I'm waiting for Toyota corp to call me back, I called them this morning and told them how rude the dealership was to me and refuse to tell me why the wouldn't cover it under warranty other than the district rep denied my truck repair for miss use. So I have to wait for them to call back.
I will have the truck towed back to my house, the parts are coming in Saturday and if I don't get any result with Toyota corp i will fix it myself and then take action...
Gary, don't let them fix your truck....they don't deserve the business!
They had no business telling me to talk to you about removing your truck from their lot, that was very unprofessional in my opinion.
Yeah, it was unprofessional especially since wednesday of last week I was there and told them to get the parts and fix it. I'm thinking about selling my cruiser and just getting an 80....
