Are there any broken diffs from the newer FJs? My third member has a built date of 5/23/07 and I am wondering if we know when or even if the newer buld dates are stronger than what was apparently put in the earlier models. I don't see any broken ones on this thread from build dates as late as mine.

Mine broke over the weekend at Spring Fling along with another FJ on the trail.
I have no clue when or how it happened. Everything was going fine, but when I got on the dirt road to exit back to the main road I started hearing the grinding noise that got louder and quicker the faster I drove.
The mfg date for the FJ is 04/06...don't know what the 3rd Member date is as its at the dealership. Sounds like they will cover it, but they were asking lots of questions. Mileage is ~26,5000
When this has happened to others, do they just replace the broken piece in the rear diff, or do they give you a new rear end? If the newer FJs are not having this problem, it sure would be nice to upgrade. But i guess I should just consider myself thankful to have the current repair covered. I also drove it from Moab back to SLC with the loud noisy backend doing its thing. Lucky I dind't get stranded on the higway somewhere.

Added both of you to the list.
Hopefully you will report back that the dealer replaced it FOC under warranty. Please post any follow up info. TY

oh....removing you from the list. Well If you drive carefully less gas, and better lines, you might not have to worry. But only time will tell. I still worry when I go out wheeling. I just try to use less gas and better lines. Don't spin your wheels or hop and you will most likely be fine. I'm not saying that the people on this list hopped their rear ends or were gassing it to much, I'm just saying take it slow and easy whenever possible.

Pardon my ignorance, but does this mean they gave you a new rear axle?
After speaking to my rep, sounds like they will be doing the same thing. I asked if I would be getting the new diff on it thats used with the newer FJs and he seemed to indicate that this was the case. Which would be great news, because the older diffs seem to be the ones causing all the problems. But he doesn't really know for sure because its all the same part #. So I hope I get the 2nd gen not a new 1st gen.
Thanks,
kalen

No, they replaced the unit that contains the ring and pinion. Look at the rear pumpkin, it is the front part of it where the drive shaft attaches. That whole unit unbolts and that is what they replace, instead of replacing just your ring and pinion. And yes, I am sure you will get the latest batch, although I am not sure if they are any stronger. Good luck hope everything works out for you.

What they replace is know as the "third member"

While I'll agree that treating the thing like a piece of glass would help to keep it from breaking just stating to not spin your wheels or hop is wishful thinking, the reality is that is does not take spinning your wheels or hopping to break the teeth on the ring gear.
Mine broke last September (two broke that day)and now having been in Moab this past weekend to witness and hear about 4 more (yes just this past weekend!) I'd hate to be the owner of an early build with an automatic transmission as you have a time bomb on your hands. Toyota should steep up here instead of inflicting this stress and major inconvenience on owners. I could care less about inner fender bulges compared to this defect they saddled us with!

Dam it man, I'm driving a time bomb! Sheet. And, you are right, it's hard not to spin but when I do I get off the skinny and try a different line.
I can only hope IF and when it happens to me that Toyota Takes care of it FOC and under warranty. It's too bad that we have to have that thought of the diff going out in the back of our heads every time we go off road in our "Off Road" 4x4s.
I just think it's so fugging funny how a Dealer asks a 4x4 FJ owner "were you off roading?"
