Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

Hey Ropedrag,

The count actually went to 5 over the weekend as Just4Fun's rear diff went out as well as he was driving back to the SLC area. I hope the updated 3rd members are indeed more reliable as pretty much every instance I've heard of has been with a early manufacture date rear end.

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

A horrible option but something to possibly consider. Please keep in mind that this is thinking worst case and that it will break which may not be the case at all but I personally know of 10 that this has affected.

If you have an early build with automatic transmission you could always purchase new ring and pinion gears and have your mechanic swap em out. Granted this option is out of pocket expenses $600 to 700 +/- however you wouldn't need to worry about it each time you leave the house and are out in the wilds. On the other hand a wicked tow bill plus a rental car while the dealership orders the part and fixes your rig can add up costs fairly quickly as well.

It seems that for most and as was the case for me that the dealer had no issue replacing the third member under warranty. But realize that the third member is $1200 without labor and at some point I have to question if Toyota is going to pull a "you have to many miles for it to be covered".

Also to clarify, the third member is basically the differential that includes the front of the housing, ring and pinion, carrier, and locker (if so equipped). It's the actual ring gear part of this that has been breaking.

I don't have to imagine to awfully hard to feel the list at the start of this thread is a fraction of the actual numbers of owners that have had issues.

You proposal is exactly what I'm planning on doing. That is, with the exception of going to the 4.56 gears being offered by JT's. I get so paranoid every time I'm out with the family that I have to be proactive about getting things done before I'm a "victim" of this issue....

That is the first and only one I've ever heard about.
