Thumbs up Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

Could you add tisilverFJ to the list? I think his info is a page or two back.

I watch this thread a lot, because I've got an early build date with auto trans. The year is tore off from my sticker on the diff, but the month and day are 2-2. My FJ build date is 2-06. Feels like I'm waiting for a bomb to go off. I just hope it happens when I'm IN civilization, and still under warranty. I wish Toyota would just step up and do a recall, or at least a TSB.

Got it thank you.

Forgot to add my FJ's build date, 05/06, 3rd member build date is 04/28/06.
I'll add you when/if yours explodes. Ty all.

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

Wow, great pics from the last few pages. Glad to see TEQ taking care of business too.
Here's a shot of my ring gear from last summer (06-2007) after we pulled it out in the Home Depot parking lot. I wished TEQ would have let me keep it, but I guess they wanted to test it.

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

Is this happening with just the auto equipped FJ's or are there some manual trans units that are failing? I ask this because the axle ratios are different in the manual trans units. The gears for the manuals may be made by a different vendor or at least in a different batch.

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

I believe that this has been explained in this thread and others... It seems almost 99% auto's but there has been a manual known to have a failed rear diff.

That's good to know. Thanks. I did try to find that info in this thread (and others) but most info seemed to focus on build date. Somehow, if it is here I missed it in the 18 pages. It is relevant info that probably should be included in the "build date" info. It would be nice to know if their ring sheared while in 4 low (most likely). I do feel better now (mines a manual).

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

Its also worth noting if the rear diff was locked at the time of failure. In the threads on other forums (Ih8mud, TTORA), the Taco's that are having similar issues were "mostly" damaged while locked.

Something else to keep those of us (like me) feeding the paranoia...

Re: Broken Rear Diff / Build Date Please

2 out of the 5 I know for sure had the vehicle's rear diff lock enabled. I don't know if this is enough data to support "the reason for breaking".

I broke mine right around X-Mas time. I have a Manual Trans and I was not 'Locked" at the time, the A-Track was engaged. I am still a little worried about the front diff. hopefully it holds. The front and rear diffs. are a little small in my opinion, it would have been nice to have 9".
