Our's was over 40k when ours broke. My only suggestion, DO NOT TAKE IT TO GRAND JUNCTION... they are complete jerks about "four-wheeling" and "being in Moab".

Well six months from when the replaced my Rear Diff the first time, it just blew out AGAIN!
It now was just under 36,000 miles.
Climbing a little hill I have done a million times, well not really a million, but many times before.
Arrrgggggg!!!! It was close to home, so I just limped back home!

Man, I thought we were the only one's dealing with this on the Titan forum! We are still keeping an eye out for a used or new FJC and this is not good news. My question: What is the latest build date for a blown diff? Were there any '07 dates? Just curious what to look for in a used FJC.
Well I just joined Busted Diff Club at the 2nd Annual FJ Summit in Ouray, Colorado. I did it Friday just shy of the crest of Engineer Pass.
Huge thanks to Bill (El Durt) & Athena (Athenaceleste), Gordon (GW), Dennis (JoeUser), Victor (1Poser), Woody, MrsTenneseeSquire, TenneseeSquire and all the NM FJers (especially ArchyChris) for their support. Big thanks to my understanding and supportive wife Pat and my seven-year old son who rolled with the flow.
Stats-
Diff Breakage – 7-18-08
Took delivery 7-31-06
Mileage – 19310
Third Member Build Date – 6-21-06
AT
At time of break – 4L w/ATRAC & Rear Locked
Warranty Coverage Unknown at this time, talk to the Montrose Toyota dealership in the morning.

Tomas,
Thanks to Woody at the Toyota Trails Team for helping to locate another third member Diff. Warranty should cover this. Keep us posted on the out come. Talk to later buddy. Chris

I talked to the trail team on one of our runs in Ouray and I was informed that Toyota is aware of the issue and that it should covered with the earlier build dates. He even went so far as to state that I should have no issues with going to my dealer and letting them know that i had the unhardened gears and they should remove and replace them.
You can all stop laughing now! I guess they do not know my dealer. I am so worried that I refuse to use the rear locker at all. I plan to try and talk to the dealer about it? I just thought that I would pass along the info and if you want to give it a try good luck
I got mine back yesterday. This is my SECOND warranty rear diff replacement.
They never really said anything to me. They just fixed it and in record time this time.
But I seem to remember someone said the part number had changed on one of his replacement carriers. I searched and searched and could not find that post.
Here is the part number of my new "Carrier Assy, Dif" 41110-60A00.

I recently hit 36,000 miles, and was concerned that my warranty was about to expire (I since re-read my paperwork and realized that powertrain is a 60,000 mile warranty.)
I asked about the cost of the extended warranty (about $1,400)- and then I asked about the cost to replace the the ring gear (BEFORE it broke)... and that was about $1,700.
I'd be MUCH more interested in taking care of the problem with preventative replacement than I would trying to limp home from God-knows-where after a breakage.
No one at my dealership seems to have any idea that there have been rear diff problems with FJs, which is ridiculous. I'm most definitely an early build automatic FJ, so it makes me paranoid, dangit.
It should be cheaper to take care of the problem before the damage occurs, in my opinion. I hate the "if we don't admit it, it doesn't exist" mentality.
I've never met any of the Trail Teams folk, or any Toyota service folk... but I sure wouldn't mind hearing their unofficial/off-the-record advice.

Mine broke with only the ATRAC on. I actually hardly ever use the rear locker. I don't think that not using the locker will help you.
