Well in your warranty book that should come along with your owner's manual... it says they will cover the tow bill and any other accomodations like motel stay and what not due to the break down. I don't have the book infront of me so I can't tell you what the "catches" are, but check into it.

Ben and Delray, Sorry to hear that two more friends have made the list.
I'd hammer the hell out of the dealer for all expenses. Toyota is betting on the fact that this defect (anyone want to argue that it's not?) is limited to a known number of FJ's and they are playing the numbers game by not having a recall. Heck they could actually replace a large percentage of the known number and still come out ahead in the long run. And you can bet the vendor that actually made the gears is paying the bill anyway.
Interesting to see that it's mentioned in a photo caption in the May/June issue of 4WD toyota owner on page 32.
I'm wondering how far this will eventually go and how damaging it's going to be to the FJ perception (real or imagined).

It is at Brent Brown Toyota in Provo UT. The service person I am working with is Shane. He was not aware of this particular issue. I did print out the relevant pages from this thread and gave him a copy which he said he would show the service manager. I am hoping and expecting they will take care of this under warranty based on others experience here. I have babied my FJ with synth fluids, frequent changes and general love including using it for its intended off-road purpose
It broke on the Fins and Things trail in Moab. We had just completed a mild fin and were in a sandy stretch when I started getting that pop and pull. Scary feeling. We hobbled back to Sandhill Road and over to the Slick Rock parking lot. Mark who owns Bridgestone tires came by in his Cherokee and recommended KL or Kael and Nationwide when 411 could not get us a tow company that was open.
Any advice on how to deal with this if they give me the run-around on coverage? It looks like others here in Utah from the April run had good service/coverage at their dealers. I will let you know how Brent Brown does, they seem responsive so far but I have heard nothing definitive yet.
So sorry to hear this Delane . It sure appears that the ratio of auto trans to manual is like 20 to 1. I know the gearsets are different. I wonder what's caused the manuals to fail? Hope it gets fixed in a hurry. I was hoping to get you out next Sunday on our Ghost Town trip.

I didn't notice that about auto vs. manual. So the manuals are breaking more? Because mine is a auto. Any stats on how many more manuals there are than autos, because that might just be a statistical issue due to there being a lot more manuals than autos.

No, I typed that wrong I guess. I've just noticed that nearly all the failures seem have been in the Autos.

Ah, OK, that's what I thought. That would have surprised me.

I want to clarify the diff situation with a few questions:
So far, Has this only been identified with diffs marked with an 06 build date?
Does the list on page 1 include everyone on this forum with diff issues (give or take)?
Have any 08 rigs experienced this issue - specifically TT?
Is the new diff that is being used to replace the defective part a proper fix?
Thanks for your help guys - I hope to be a new owner soon - once I am satisfied with this issue and the body ripping issue.
The diffs seem to be mostly built in 06 with an Automatic tranny. I'm not sure if we have everyone who had a diff go in their FJ add their info to this list. As for repeat breakers, no clue. I'm sure if it happens they will let us know here.
