Re: New FJ's, Check Your Lug Nuts! They may be too loose or too tight.

Okay, newbie question: I want to check and set my lugs properly but have never done it before. What do I need to buy and how do I measure the proper (85ft) tightness when tightening or loosening?

thanks in advance

I believe lug nut torque should always be checked, after a few hundred miles, on new vehicles and tire change/rotation, as they loosen.

Checked and torqued mine to 85 ft/bls. yesterday. Front passenger side was right on....all the others were a little less than 85. Definetly a good thing to check.

After my tires were replaced under the recall, we re-checked them. The tire shop had NOT torqued them uniformly.

So do it again if your tires have been re-done due to the recall.

You'll need a 1/2" drive torque wrench & 21mm 6 point deep socket. Get a cheap one (Made in China) from Harbor Freight if that's all you'll be using it for. Crack one of the lug nuts loose then tighten to spec. in a cross alternating pattern. They say the wheel should be off the ground for proper torque but I'm too lazy...

Re: New FJ's, Check Your Lug Nuts! They may be too loose or too tight.

checked mine tonight out of concern (didn't have a torque wrench) just did it by feel with the tire iron,, anyway did find 1 loose on every wheel,, now I'm suspicious, did this truck come with locks? and the dealer took them,, now I have to find that window sticker, also I went 1 step further took a reading on all 4 tires 38#'s cold, so I checked the door sticker and they say 32,, is the dealer also hiding something else? could this be the reason for my vibes @60mph

There are cases poping up all over of soft or bad lug nuts on FJCs.

I went to retorque my lugs last night (on my FJC). Set a good quality torque wrench to 85ftlbs and went at it. I do lugs carefully and gently with even twist. I spun two front ones, and broke one on the front right. It spun right off while tightening under the specified torque.

I started reading today and found at least 10 separate cases on the internet of the same thing. Lugs breaking at less than spec torque. Even the dealer said they already had another case. (Though they are not as of now replacing them under waranty.)

I am obsessive and experienced at ensuring proper lug nut torque because i do track stuff with my RX-7 and bad lug torque can at best ruin a wheel or rotor when the brakes start to glow under hard braking. At worst can cause a wheel or rotor to come apart at 120mph...

I smell an impending recal or TSB....

Please post the links where this particular issue has been discussed.

Thanks!

Re: New FJ's, Check Your Lug Nuts! They may be too loose or too tight.

i wonder if this is somehowrelated to the torquing sequence. I half torgue mine in the order 1, 3, 5, 2, 4, 6 and then torque to spec in that order and then retorque again. This can reduce rotor warp and ensure uniform torque. Using anti-sieze helps also ensure accurate torquing.

From Corvette to Civic, I've never had one come loose at 85 ft lbs.

(I did have my LF Ronal R9 pass me on a 77 1/2 Z28 20 some-odd years ago....fckin tire jockeys)
