Looks like my Transmission Leaking (thoughts?)

Well I went out the other day and had a little fun, got a little dirty. So went under the FJ to clean it up this morning and found this

I am not to keen on the aspects of the Transmission so I am not to sure what exactly could be leaking. Hoping I could get some different opinions from the wonderful forum members on here . I am going to check it in a bit sense I cleaned it, see if I can isolate where it is coming out at.

I am also concerned about the low level of fluid I probably have in my Trans. I can never find anything in the repair manual and was hoping someone could let me know how to check the fluid in a A/T

Thanks a bunch for any input!

Re: Looks like my Transmission Leaking (thoughts?)

Looks to be your rear main seal, I think you are seeing engine oil not trans fluid. Clean the areas where you have oil, then drive it and check again. If it is trans oil it will be a reddish color, engine oil will be dark. The auto trans is checked by pulling the fill plug, then use your finger to check the fluid level. Could also be your oil pan is leaking around the gasket. This happened all the time in my FJ 62.

clean it like your covering up a murder! My transmission ATF was very dark when it failed on me but not like that. Dont leave any dirt, grime, sand, grass, muck or whatever. Take it in to the dealer bro!

Good Luck!

...BTW my auto trans replacement took 16 days in the shop.

That looks like engine oil not AT Fluid..

AT Fluid will be a redish color when you touch it.. And we all know what oil is..
I would just take it to the dealership,(after you clean it) and have it fixed.. it should be covered under warranty..

Thanks for the input. I am going to check it after driving home from work today.

Yeah, I am going to take it in but just wanted to get some thoughts. Hopefully it is just a seal and it is just oil (cause I checked the level of that and it is still full)

Re: Looks like my Transmission Leaking (thoughts?)

OK After talking to Corey and looking at the photos...

The Pipes are leaking there. It is coming off the pipes close to the transmission. You can see the drops in the last photo. It is spraying onto the Bell Housing and dripping down from there.

I am pretty sure those pipes are going to the tranny cooler. That is why it only leaks when it is running (under pressure) and why there is the spray pattern all around it. And he does not have oil spots in his driveway.

If it was the main seal or Tranny seal it would NOT get up onto those pipes.

But that does mean his tranny fluid might be low now.

Re: Looks like my Transmission Leaking (thoughts?)

So it is not oil, doesn't smell like it. Might have another idea as to where it is coming out of.......What purpose does the thing in the red square serve? What is it? Cleaning it out there was a bunch of mucky crap in there.

I cleaned it and have had no leaking from anywhere I can see yet. Maybe tomorrow...........???
