I've already had all four pads replaced and the rotors turned due to my brakes not operating right. To sum up a long story, my brake pedal is airy and doesn't have any significant feedback when applied. It basically feels like I'm not going to stop when I apply the brakes. Once the dealership did their work (under warranty of course), all as well again.
A few days ago, my rig began doing this again. This time, there was no panic stop involved preceding it. So why did my FJ just begin acting up again? I also want to mention that now whenever I do come to a stop, I get the "FJ-Lunge". Not just on hard stops, but with every single one, and it's harsher than it usually is. My rig has also began rolling forward on it's own as if the brakes just release themselves. This has only happened three times, but three in two days is unacceptable. Hell, this is all unacceptable. Oh, and I also sometimes get a grabbing sensation (almost as is the engine is mis-firing and hesitating into gear) when I even lightly begin to accelerate from a stop.
My wife was in the FJ with me the last time we began rolling forward, and is now afraid to ride in it. I don't blame her. I'm taking it in to be looked at in a few minutes. The dealership opens at 7am to begin admitting cars, and I want to get there first in line.
I hope Toyota is ready for a hell of a fight because I'll be there every day to get this solved if necessary. I'll be sure to let you all know what the verdict is when I learn more. If they try and tell me this inherent in the FJ I'm going to laugh and leave it there until they fix it for good, or replace my rig with a new one.
I'll be leaving to pick up my rig in a few minutes, but wanted to chime in and post an update. The service writer took my concerns very seriously, and had the lead tech on duty come out and drive it right away. I got a call a few hours ago from the service writer I worked with this morning, and was informed that there was a loose/faulty caliper pin, and that it had been replaced under warranty as well as the rest of the braking system being taken apart, inspected and put back together showing everything was fine.
Hopefully this fixes my issues once and for all with the brakes. I'm really beginning to lose some of my love for the FJ right now. I mean, not to be a downer; It's just that I've only had my rig (and fallen madly in love with it) for three months.
They didn't have anything to say as to what caused it to fail. The parts were replaced under warranty, and I was on my way. All the service writer could tell me was that the tech had advised it was in no way my fault. I asked if it could be anything that I did and he said not at all.
I will say this though; The dealership that I took it to (Antioch Toyota) was super awesome today, totally professional and intent on finding out what the problem was, gave me updates throughout the day, provided door to door shuttle service, and washed up that filthy beast all nice and shiny.
And oh yes the best part of my day came when I arrived to pick it up. As I was taking delivery again, the service writer handed me my maintenance book and said that they performed my first full oil change and service at no charge. (replaced oil and filter, inspected and topped off vitals, and rotated the tires, and YES THEY EVEN GREASED THE NECESSARY ZERK FITTINGS)...We had chatted up this morning about my coming road trip and he just said your FJ is all good to go for that trip.
I couldn't freaking believe it, but when I got home I popped the hood and sure enough, clean oil, a new filter up top, and I got under the truck and found they indeed greased the zerks. My tires are all set at exactly 32PSI to boot!!! I can honestly say I recommend Antioch Toyota to anyone and everyone in need of a dealership that will take care of your rig and provide excellent service. My rig drives like it's brand new again and looks the part too. I know that to some it may not seem like much, but to me, it's little freebies like this that just make me smile and feel good inside
Happy to hear they fixed your problem. They sound as good as my guys in Lafayette, IN. Nothing but good things to say about the guys and gals at Rohrman Toyota! Tim
Oh what a feeling...glad to hear that you're a happy camper again. Bad brakes are something nobody wants. FYI, my girlfriend has the same rig as mine but her brakes are more sensitive than mine needing less pressure on the brake pedal to stop. Go figure...
Rarely hear good reports from dealers like that anymore. Glad you got your problem fixed. I would seriously flip out if my 2.5 ton rig decided it didn't want to stop..or just all of a sudden roll forward in rush hour traffic. Thankfully we still have a mechanical parking brake.
taking my 2007 fj cruiser to the dealer tuesday it seems to be doing the same thing. i was just wondering if replacing the pin had fixed the problem? thats a really scary feeling... the first time mine did it we were sitting at a red light and it felt like someone had bumped into the rear of the vechicle.
