Windshield Replacement

Well pretty new to the boards here but wanted to share my first problem with the FJ. Long story short I was merging onto the highway in rain and a truck in the left lane flew by and deposited a rock on my windshield that cracked it about 3 inches. I called the Safelite windshield folks on Monday to have them out to fix it. Well they couldn't make it my way until Tuesday. In that timeframe the crack grew to more than 6 inches and the tech said he couldn't fix it so I had to replace it. He called in and quoted me 385.00 to replace it. I ok'd it and set up the next day (today) to have them come back and fix it.

Today about noon I got a call from them saying that I was misquoted and the total cost was going to be 838.00 because of a "kit" they had to purchase to replace the windshield on FJ's. So I scrambled to get my insurance involved since it was now over my deductible. I got the ok and had it replaced.

What I learned.....

The "Kit" is the top white windshield component. By the way, mine came off fine so I can reuse it later or sell it I guess. BUT the reason it came off fine was because the adhesive that is suppose to be on the strip in 5 different places (between the clips) was there but the bead was not large enough to seal it to the windshield so the only thing holding in on was the clips.

Now from driving it before /after new windshield I can tell a marked reduction in noise.....

/happy days

Get the glass coverage... so worth it. Just had mine replaced... no cost....PPG glass, with a tint of green.

Re: Windshield Replacement

There are a number of posts from some early on incidents with windshield replacements and even directions for cutting the seal and reusing the upper trim so your installer doesn't have to bilk you for the whole kit. A quick search and I'm sure you will find more then enough data.

My first replacement was $1260, second one two weeks later was $980, both from Safelite. The difference is that my first used Toyota glass, the second used PPG. I haven't had any problems with either install. The location I used has done lots of FJs, in fact there was a TRD getting a new windshield the same day I got my second one.

I agree with everyone that has said that the glass coverage through your insurance is worth it. I chose a $0 deductible and so neither windshield cost me anything out of pocket. I think it's maybe $50 more every six months for that extra coverage.

Re: Windshield Replacement

My wife was given a quote of $450 from our local Toyota dealer(Shore Toyota in the Atlantic City area) several months ago. We've yet to have it done(for some reason she opted for a $500 comprehensive deductable when she nenewed the insurance...WTF!)

She's been driving for around ten months with 4" x 8" L-shaped crack on the passenger side. She swears nothing hit the windshield....it just appeared one day after there was a big temperature change. The crack clearly originates from underneath the molding but the guys from the dealership were giving her a BS line about seeing a stone chip several inches above the molding. I've looked at it several times from every angle and I'll be damned if I see any evidence of a stone chip.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Same story...... Washed my car last week (it was a hot day) and my window cracked from top to bottem right in front of my line of sight. Couldnt find a single rock chip. My wife took it to Toyota and they ran a pin along the window and say that a rock hit it right where it hits the top molding. Toyota told me im hard luck and my window is gonna shatter any minute now! I can barly see a mark there. I also have another chip about 8 inches away. Its been there for about 6 months (been in the snow and heat) and hasnt grown an inch. Break out another thousand!

Re: Windshield Replacement

last month i found out about the pricing when i had my wind shield replaced. ended up goin through the insurance company. found out i could change my deductable to 100$ for only 25$ more every six months just for wind shields. figured that would save me bein these things are rock magnets.
