Puulboy, why don't you sum it up for us then? From what I have read in passing I would have to agree with Bender - doors opening, fast, rough terrain, and wheel bottoming out are the theories people have posted. Nowhere did he say anything about stock vs. nonstock; my stock goes fast over rough terrain and the suspension bottoms out!
There isnt anything to sum up. Many of the stock vehicles dont wheel at all. There are many more theories out there beside the 3 mentioned.
Yes, I believe this does cloud the issue. The poll on this website shows the majority of respondents with bulges in the engine bay are stock vehicles. I am still surprised how many on this forum promote the false theory that this is limited to hard-core wheelers or modified rigs. It is not.

WRONG it is not a majority that are stock. The stock vehicles are the single largest group but the majority by, 70%, are not stock. Not saying that has anything to do with the bulges necessarily but the majority are not stock.

I stand corrected, but I think you know what I meant. The largest single category of owners in the poll with the problem were stock vehicles. If you add that to lifts, and larger tires than you can find a majority.
The FACT is, and this is undeniable, that this large group of owners are getting the issue with NO modifications whatsoever, so that disproves a definitive cause being modifications doesn't it?
I had the bulges appearing at about 12K before I ever did any driving off-road or any mods whatsoever. Obviously I am not alone, so it is a bit maddening seeing the myth perpetuated about modifications and hardcore wheeling being the cause.
From what I've heard, the main theories on causes for fender bulges are:
- Jumping or, for lack of a better term, high-speed off-roading
- contact with the bumper
- forceful door-opening/wheel bottom-out
not sure on which of the above theories is correct or incorrect-
Not sure where you picked up your information, but if you spent a few minutes reading some of the threads dedicated to this issue, you would find out that NONE of the theories you've listed is a current theory at all. Forceful door opening ???? Come on folks, let's try to use a little common sense here...

You damn hi jackers! This is about rear door issues. Chit chat about your fender aprons elsewhere. This dude definitely has ot been off road with his rig. Didn't appear to be the "abusive" type either. When I get my rig back Ill take a pic of the location I am referring to.

Heres a pict sorry I think I need a new camera.
Where you see the white line is, the paint is starting to crack I work construction so I open and close the door at least 2 times a day minimum if not more to get tools.
It looks like the lip on the door isnt strong enough and bends after a while.
Thats what I think any input is welcomed
Well, Day two of being registered and already I feel somewhat helpful. Might have to stick around.....
Anyway, I might be able to shed some light on this subject.
I purchased my Toyota (in Prince George, British Columbia) and it had about 1,000 clicks on it. Damn the "no demo" thing they do, all cars have mileage on em. Anyhow, it had the rear door crack which they fixed and paid for.
So right off the lot this was a problem. So directly a result for manufacturing.
