I was wondering if anyone who had this problem. If I brake reasonably hard, kind of emergency breaking and then try to ease the brakes on after that, the brakes grab so hard that it is almost like the original braking. It will do that two or three times before I finally am able slow smoothly.
Anyone hear of this?
Brake Assist (BA) In emergencies, some drivers, especially inexperienced ones, often panic and do not apply sufficient pressure on the brake pedal. Brake Assist measures the speed and force with which the brake pedal is pushed to determine whether the driver is attempting an emergency stop. If the system determines that is the case, it applies additional brake pressure to allow the driver to take full advantage of the ABS brake system. When the driver intentionally eases up on the brake pedal, the system reduces the amount of assistance it provides. This feature comes with VSC.Toyota Glossary

No doubt waynesel is dubious on the...ahem...explanation on why that unpleasant experience was actually *a good thing*.
Now he will know that if he hits the brakes hard, and then wants to lighten up, the brake system will second guess him, behave erratically, ignore his braking input, and cause him to hit--or be hit by--what he otherwise could have easily avoided. All this to accommodate the stupid driver that he is not.
Yes, waynesel, you'll really appreciate that next time it happens to you.
I think it would have been more honest for our experts to just admit that this defect is present in the system, and you should learn to live with it, and hope it doesn't interfere with some evasive maneuver you might attempt in the future.
I'll admit it's not perfect....but very few things are.
I thought you folks could handle the truth...
If you TOTALLY remove your foot from the brake briefly and re-apply with less force, it brakes normally. It will not repeat 2-3 times before acting normal if you let the pedal return to the top of it's travel.
I just didn't want someone to go to the dealership complaining about a problem when it's inherent in the design of the vehicle and get told some bullchit story.

Re: Hard Braking
Actually, I absolutely love the brakes on the FJ. Three times this week, they have saved my ass big time. Twice when deer have popped out in front of me and once when a teeny bopper ran right out in front of me - I'm absolutely convinced that had I been driving any of my former vehicles, I would have hit her.

it can be a little over-eager at times.
i've had it engage without a panic stop.
but i rarely brake without downshifting to 3rd or 2nd, so the brakes don't get much of a workout.

Try going down a very steep hill and apply the brakes - she grabs big time, especially if you braked a bit harder just before you head down hill.....

Do you think he might have been pumping up the brake master cylinder? If you pump the brake pedal a few times, you can "build up" the pressure on the master and it will give you more braking force nearer the top of the pedal.
