Unhappy Intermittent hot start problem **SOLVED**

Wife's 07' FJ with 10K miles exhibiting a failure to start when hot. Cold starts not a problem, but, twice now the wife's out running errands and calls me saying when the ignition key is turned - nothing, no cranking just dead. I advised her to open the hood and check the fuse boxes and push everything in. The truck will eventually start.

I havn't involved the dealer yet, because, I know what's going to happen
"Sorry, can't reproduce the problem" or "Sorry, can't find anything wrong"

I thought I would check here for any info before I go down that road.
Thanks,

-Eric

######## UPDATE #########
When we purchased the car from the dealer (I-10 Toyota) in Indio, CA.
The dealer installed a "anti-theft" device that required that the headlight control was pulled when starting.

Unbeknownst to us this was some piece of **** after market item the dealer installed on a brand new car hoping to jack the customer for additional $300. And made it seem that it was a genuine Toyota option component and wanted to charge us for it, we declined to pay for it, but kept it on the car anyway.

It was a very shoddy install, ugly wiring and splice job. The mechanic was able to reproduce the problem by wiggling the tap connecting it to the headlamp wiring.

So, I would advice anyone to refuse such lame add on equipment and DO NOT BUY FROM I-10 Toyota.

Re: Intermittent hot start problem

The only time I've had the FJ fail to start is when I switched out my set of keys to the valet key. I started the FJ in the morning, (cold) and realized I forgot something in the house. So I turned of the FJ, (house keys on same ring...) and then tried to restart the FJ using the valet key. She turned over, and over, and over, but wouldn't start. I tried for several minutes, given it time in between, and finally she started. I find the FJ does not like being stopped and restarted right away, especially when cold.

Your problem sounds like loose wiring or contact. When the FJ is hot, this wire/contact expands and breaks the circuit. If you have the service manual, try tracing the starter circuits wiring to see if the problem can be traced down. Very unlikely but another possibility is the ECU is overheating, and that will cause the FJ to not start, but this is very unlikely unless you have a faulty ECU.

Bring that sucker to the dealer, don't even bother with something like that, get it doccumented and fixed. It could be something very simple but electrical components are fickle and expensive if it's not just a contact.

Re: Intermittent hot start problem

Agreed, take it to the dealer and shut it off. Ask to see the service mgr. and take him out to your FJ and try to start it so he can see it happen first hand.
