Tire Balance Steering Vibration Sticky

there are a LOT of people having this steering/wheel balancing vibration at 58-75mph. especially since the tire recall. i really think we should have this important information as a sticky. i also think this should be brought to toyota corporate's attention.

hopefully toyota will issue an FJ specific Special Service Campagn for these balance issues. maybe there will be a new steering rack they can install or something to fix this.

this is something a 2007 vehicle should not be doing!

for now here is what seems to help.

We are a custom wheel/tire shop that has had the same problem. Seems most noticable on lifted FJ's and always between 58-65 mph. Have heard that the CV joint angle &/or the rack & pinion weekness is a major factor.
So far our fixes include(on custom wheels): Offset of +15mm(8" wide), ALWAYS hub centric wheels, road force of 15 lbs or less, on Hunter 9700's; back cone (w/ hub rings installed) & the front finger set up & MOST IMPORTANT with the new 9700's software; DISABLE the (stupid) Smart Weigh!!!! The "Smart Weigh" tends to Average / Round way too much for sensitive applications. Of course the above doesnt always work, about 1 in 5 are way too sensitive for the above to work and 1 in 2 dont need any special treatment and they are fine.

Re: Tire Balance Steering Vibration Sticky

If we posted every reported "problem" as a sticky you would need to go to page 2 to actually read a post that wasn't a sticky on that forum. I think we're boarding sticky-mania as it is....

That's for sharing your info on fixes. My lifted Taco had bad vibrations. After a bazzillion fixes (which did help a little), I dealt with the fact that I have a modified rig that vibrates. I actually stopped noticing it

Now, I do think its unfortunate that stock FJ's are having this problem.

Re: Tire Balance Steering Vibration Sticky

there are going to be 9,000 additional people with vibration on top of the large group of people that already have vibration problems. that's a lot more people than "leaky roof" or "defective fuel float". it is definitely a problem that goes hand in hand with (SSC)--60D.

it's not just unfortunate, but it is a pretty major Toyota issue that people will return their FJ's for. there is no reason why the FJ should be more sensitive to vibration than 4runner or land cruiser.

i would just like Toyota to notice and do something about the problem. they obviously are aware of it in Japan because all the tires on the stock wheels were balance perfectly.

think about what is going to happen when people need to change their tires for wear, every FJ is going to have heavy vibration. Toyota is going to need to do something about it.

Re: Tire Balance Steering Vibration Sticky

I made a detailed Post (months ago) on the realities of lifting (especially IFS vehicles).

If someone wants a Big Rig - Go ahead and Lift BUT don't complain when your Ride Quality, Fuel economy, and dependability goes into the basement with your OEM parts.

How anybody can Modify a carefully Engineered vehicle and then complain when it does behave like stock -is beyond me.

Doesn't matter whos post it was or what number it was, I was responding to your "comment" directed at me like I pulled the Lifted FJ issue out of the sky.
Within a post that you made You included a referance to the problem being more prevalent in "Lifted FJ's" and I merely responded.
Read your own posts more closely next time and maybe a side-track can be avoided.
