Wondering if there's anything in the steering assembly designed to minimize road vibrations? I noticed on my FJ that I feel excessive road vibrations through the steering wheel. Even things as small as little rocks are felt. Driving down a gravel road the other day I couldn't believe how every little road imperfection and gravel could be felt. I feel this on paved roads as well when something small is ran over. It almost feels as if my hands are in direct contact with the pavement when holding onto the steering wheel, like there is no cushioning at all.
So I guess my question is...is this something that all FJ owners experience or could there be something wrong in the steering assembly? My FJ only has 14,000 miles on it and has never been off road. I have never experienced this in any other car/truck I have owned before.
I bought it used so can't say for sure. The size is 265 70R/17 with the BBS rims. I would assume with only 14,000 miles on it they are the original tires.
before my lift and tires... With the TRD shocks, I thought my fj drove incredibly smooth on everything. But, I also drove a stock FJ and thought it was too soft. Eitherway, it's not like an Escalade, Yukon, or Navigator by any means. but, if you wanted that type of drive, then the FJ isn't the vehicle for you.
Did it drive better before? Or has it been like that since you bought it used?

I would have to say it's been like that since I bought it. It does seem like I notice it more now but I think it's probably only because I am aware of it and I focus on it more.
I know it's not a luxury SUV but I've owned a jeep and a toyota 4X4 truck (considered off road vehicles) and never felt anything through the steering wheel like I do with the FJ.

If your running stock tires, make sure they are set to 32 psi and all the same.

I checked that out the other day. They were all at 32 psi. I actually bumped them all up by 5 to 37psi to see if that would make any difference, it didn't.
I have the stock Dunlops on mine and even they offer a pretty smooth ride. My past experiences with steering wheel slippage on vehicles tells me you could use a wheel balance...even though 14K seems very early for that.
Other than that the aftermarket rims would come into question. No expert here; just going by past exeperience.

Bumping the pressure up should actually make it worse. The harder the tire, the more you are going to feel each rock and pebble in the road.

I thought about the wheel balance but quickly ruled it out because it drives fine, no vibrations, when the road is smooth. It only comes into play when there is road imperfections or when you run over something ie.rocks etc. Then it's feels as though the FJ is riding on your hands rather than it's tires. The suspension seems fine....this is all being felt through the steering wheel.
The rims are BBS, I believe that was an upgrade package through toyota...not an aftermarket rim.
Does anyone know if there's something within the steering assembly designed to minimize this...act as a shock absorber or something?.....my thoughts were maybe something needed replacing.
