Are you thinking of driving from the Colorado River to Camp Cady? The guide book suggests that this is a 3-day drive (138 mi) and that Soda Lake should be avoided ("there are areas to avoid, unless you're in it for the challenge; but frankly, crossing the sandy expanse where the Mojave River becomes a floodplain, or Soda Lake, doesn't appeal. I've been stuck in sand and am not anxious to repeat it").
If I am reading the guide correctly, it also says that it took the author 7 hours to travel 40 miles and reach Government Holes (it is not clear if this was driving time alone, or with stops).
I am anxious to hear/learn more.

I just took a look at a 2nd guide book. It divides the trip into 3 sections. Each section is approximately 40 miles and takes approximately 5 hr. driving time (under ideal conditions and without stops).
I wonder if any one would consider doing just the eastern and central sections of the road (that would leave out Soda Lake and allow for more exploration along the way).

You are talking about the old mojave road that comes out in Needles, right?
If so, it appears to definately be an easy two day run. There is a group from Adventure 4x4 doing this run the 8 and 9th of september. Check out the trail run section of the forum over there. Was also featured in the sept issue of off road. There are some links to a video of the run on the a4x4 site as well.
Good chance jean and I will be interested in going in oct, we will need to check the schedule to be sure.

My sense would be to do just that. The Devil's playground/soda lake area isn't all that scenic and makes the 2 day run fun and do-able with a third "day" getting to the Colorado River end. Run the trail East to West. The 5 hours quoted is about right. Tack on another 2 hours for rubber-necking and exploring and it's not a taxing day.
I'm packing for a "crisis" trip to Italy tomorrow for work and the phone is ringing off the hook from my boss -- cell died with constant use -- so I don't have time to scan the map and all, but will do that and will annotate it when I get back in a week and will post it here.

Thanks, Rick. Yes, check on the Adventure 4x4's run http://www.adventure4x4.net/waiting/...ead.php?t=1591 because they're doing the same trip (one overnight, two days). A month and a half earlier than I was planning. They also have something like 30 people going and that makes the going very SLOW. I would prefer a more compact group and figured that a good rule of thumb is that about half of the people who say they're going actually go.

Since I would need to be back to work on Monday (Twentynine Plams), my idea would be to do the eastern section on Saturday (Needles to Ivanpah Rd. basically) and the central section on Sunday (Ivanpah Rd. to Kelbaker Rd.) From there I should be able to get home in a couple of hours.

If anyone is interested in making this 140 mile run in October, and I'm thinking later in the month, perhaps Friday, October 19 through Sunday, October 21, please let me know.
If my FJC is wheel-able by then, I'd love to do it. So that's a committed "yes" - if my vehicle is good-to-go
there is a guy out of Vegas who puts together an excellent Mojave Road run each October, and as it may be Hotter, AD4x4 is doing one in September.
The first time you take the road you really need to be with someone who has taken it 4 or 5 times. There is so much to see that you pass right by if you are not with someone who really knows the road, Without the history it is just a trek through a boring desert, with the history, and know where the stops are, it is a trip of a life time. Most of the sites are within spitting distance but you would never see them if you did not know where they are.
It i a fantastic journey, and a very historical one, You will enjoy it a lot. Good Luck
