Finally bought a CB!

And, now, I don't know if I know enough to install it. I've never done CBs, done radios thought. Anyway, I got a Cobra (not the all in one, it has a box and the mic connects to it) and just grabbed a magnetic antenna like FJamming has. I got that as a, probably, temporary fix until I could find someone that knew enough to help with the install of an antenna on the back hinge.

Anyway, I want to get this thing into my FJ this weekend before next weekend's trip. Is there anything I should know? Any particularly awesome places to set it up at? Anyone live in Los Angeles that can help? I'm pretty new at this stuff and I don't want to f anything up on the FJ.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Finally bought a CB!

Hi Sean,

First you need to decide where you would like this CB to be located. The forum has a bunch of installs. If you still have some questions after reading these, post again and I'll try and help you.

CB install (Cobra 19DX IV & 4' firestik)lots of pics!!

Once you know where to plug in the power (fusebox), the rest is purely aesthetics. Really a pretty straightforward process.

And if you don't want to run it all the way over to the fuse panel you could always just get a cigarette lighter plug and make it to were you can take the radio in and out as needed. You can pick one up at radio shack or other electronics stores.

A fused lighter plug will work. Fuse is cleaner, but you can always do that later.

Re: Finally bought a CB!

Hey guys. Thanks for the heads up. I've seen the first item Tony linked to but not the others. I think I like the Alternative Install with the cigarette lighter thing for the time being. I can use that this week and then hopefully meet up with someone at another time to help me put it in permanently. I think I'll try to get to that today or tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

One thing: Tony, how do you run your antenna wire? I thought I saw it sticking out of your window. Am I wrong? Is it even possible to snake through to the back of the FJ so that it rests on the backside of the roof?

Re: Finally bought a CB!

I have it in the middle of the vehicle for best reception. I run the wire out of the back 1/2 door so I won't be opening and closing them too often. Be careful not to let them fall on the hinge when you shut the door or the line will be frayed. Sometimes if the trail has dense covering, I'll move the antenna so it won't hit the trees. It's easier in the middle of the vehicle instead of at the rear.

Re: Finally bought a CB!

I see. I'll be sure to keep that in mind and look around when I'm looking for the best wire path for the antenna.

Re: Finally bought a CB!

The metel antenna gets great reception. Not sure if you'll want to go to a fiber after this.

I got a 20 dollar kit from Cobra that had all the stuff. I actually haven't opened it yet so I don't know if it's metal. I'll report back about it.

Re: Finally bought a CB!

I got the Wilson Little Wil for a little over $40. It's a great antenna. Not all metal antennas are the same. I was going to get the 5000, but the shop told me that in a unamped unit, it's overkill. The 1000 or the Little Wil is enough.
