Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

Ok, just got off the phone with my monitor (guy who controls assignments) and was asking what he had available for me this spring/summer when I will beleaving recruiting duty. He asked me where I wanted to go and I said Yuma but thats not available. Then I asked about anything east coast and a no go there too. He asked "what about Pendleton?" and I kinda sighed, lol.

I have only been out there for short training exercises and that was a few years ago.

What is the area like?

Schools?

Crime?

Don't know anything about that specific area, but you're not too far from either SD or OC. It'd take alot to get me to move from SD...

FunJunkie would be a good contact.

A co-worker / friend of mine lives in Oceanside, and loves it. It's all good.

Re: Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

There are some campsites on the beach at Pendleton, I would love to camp there. Oceanside is a nice beach town that has grown up a lot since the old days. There is still some riff raff but it's pretty nice overall and as others mentioned San Diego and the OC are nearby. The weather has been great lately and the water is up 68-70 (warm for here). Do it!

It will be a big change from TN (where I am from too) but I sure like it here in OC. I am North of where you would be but if the FJ community is any factor for you, we are pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

Re: Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

Pendelton is Huge and they do have the only beach left in SD that you can enjoy a beer at. as for schools I believe they are on base. the housing is relatively new in some areas. it's basically like it's own city. Ocenside is right outside the gate and is a fun place. like said before there is some riffraff but you get that anywhere these days. It is pretty central to all of us wheelers down here so your options to come out and romp are plentiful. You cant beat the weather. gas prices are going back down and they got a huge commisarry shopping center. It takes about an hour to drive across the base. it's actually got some offroading areas on base too. I think you'd be making a mistake if you didn't take it. I've been out here for a year and I love it. And hell if ya decide ya don't like it then its only one tour.

Re: Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

Pendleton is 19 miles of pristine California coast line, give or take a few bomb craters here and there.

North San Diego county is a great place to live.

I lived in Solana Beach when I was in the Navy (Submarines) back in the mid 70's.

Plus, it's in California!

Dude!

Re: Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

You could get lost on Pendleton, but the military beaches ROCK! So CLEEAANNN. Joining the Marines would be worth it just for access to those

San Jaun Capistrano, the first city north of Pendleton is very nice, and is part Orange County.

Oceanside, the first city south of Pendleton, is pretty much a Marine civilization.. So you'd like it there me thinks.

The next town down, Carlsbad, is GREAT. I kind of lived there for about 4 years. Loved it!

North County SD i one of the best places in socal.

Plus you'd be close to all the wheeling, and socal fj'ers

Re: Oceanside/Camp Pendleton Area??

I have a wakeboard video of the guys at camp pendleton pulling wakeboarders through the surf using a rope attached to a Humvee. That must be a cool place to go work if they would do that!
