Baja California

Hi SoCal, I will be visiting another friend in a few weeks and he expressed the desire to visit Baja California. We will have only a few days (4 or 5), can somebody give me some advices for a scenic trip with some mild offroading? I am not looking for rock crawling, this is more like an expedition to explore those uncontaminated places.

Thank you!
Alessio

Re: Baja California

This is a link to a 3 day trip I did in Baja early this year. We traveled from Tecate to La Rumorosa to Laguna Hanson. Laguna Hanson to Mike's Sky Ranch to the Parque Nacional San Pedro Martir. Parque Nacional San Pedro Martir to Erindera and back to Tecate. I'll try and post up a map tomorrow.

Re: Baja California

Bahia Gonzaga is a great place to visit. Way off the beaten path with a great view of the Sea of Cortez on the way down. The paved road ends at Puertocitos then it's another 50 miles of easy off road driving to Gonzaga. There are some off chutes from that road if you want to make it a little more challenging. Lots of beautiful beaches too.

I would recommend this, it will allow you to see the diversity of Baja, just be prepared for anything and have fun. Also if you go though TJ do not stop on the toll road (HW 1) for anything, not even cops. If you have to stop make sure its where there is other people around.

You will have a blast take lots of pictures to share with us.

Re: Baja California

I would not travel to Mexico right now.Lot of $hit going on.Not safe at all.Cops & Federales stink.Especially if you are rolling in a new tricked out FJC.Save your self the hassle & the headache stay in the US.

Re: Baja California

There have been a lot of problems in the border towns. Tijuana-Ensenada have been the main spots with other parts of mainland Mexico that have been worse. Myself and several friends have been traveling down there all year without incident even through the height of the crime problems. The main thing is to drive during daylight hours and obey all laws. Most of the car jackings have been on the road from TJ to Rosarito around 2- 4 a.m. I've been crossing the border through Mexicali all year and felt completely comfortable every time.

The federalies aren't the ones to worry about unless you're doing something you shouldn't. The city police are the ones to get nervous about when being pulled over. Just know your rights and don't do anything outside of that.

You can get a lot of good info from bajanomadforums.com. A lot of the people on that site live in Baja and post daily reports on what's happening down there.

If you want to go but are worried about the crime problems, I would highly suggest crossing through Mexicali. Since there are no other major cities nearby there isn't much drug trafficking problems going on there. I was fishing out of San Felipe a couple months ago and my guide was telling me that his son has been a cop there for over 20 years and has never seen anything like what's been going on around the TJ/ Ensenada area.

The TJ crossing is crazy.i've seen peeps get pulled over as soon as they cross into the Mexico side.To me is too much to worry about even though I speak spanish and come from a 3rd world country and now what to look for.Maybe 2nd world.LOL
