got news this week that i will be PCSing early (jan-feb) next year to Quantico, Va. I know NOTHING about the region, other than DC is nearby and hurricanes are not fun, so im looking for some general info about the area.
Anybody from the general area have any pointers, impressions, advice, etc? You can probably guess a few of my interests based on the fact that I'm on this forum (outdoorsey stuff, offroading, hunting, fishing, etc... snowboarding in the winter) so if you can point me in the right direction for any of that kind of stuff i would appreciate it. also, any advice re: homebuying... I am sick and tired of paying out for housing and having nothing to show for it, renting sucks! what are some of the good/bad areas near quantico. figure around 200K max.

Well Virginia has everything you could want. It is a great place to be outdoors and is very beautiful. Traffic is awful, get used to the idea. Hopefully you won't be travelling into DC for your job as there is never a good time to go. On the weekends travelling anywhere will get you traffic and Quantico is right by all the traffic badness.
Real Estate is awful expensive, but I think it is going down. The most up to date listing service is HomesDatabase. Look under VA, then Prince William County. It has every listing and is updated immediately against MLS. It is awesome for seeing what is available. There are some poor areas and some house poor areas in Prince William county. Stay away from Manassas as that is where the Bobbitt family was from. It is a nice town, my boss lives there and I like him.
I don't have much more to offer, but I will try if you have a specific question.
Dude,
Where the heck have you been, I haven't seen a word out of you in months!
I missed your JDM input. Did you notice that you are member #93?
sorry for the hi-jack, but welcome back
Yeppers, ive been pretty busy at work getting one of out platoons ready to do a MEU in the pacific next year... not much free time and most of it spend sleeping or with the family... Hopefully things will quite down a bit for me with the move, im going to a training environment so there wont be nearly the emphasis on "get it done at all costs no matter how long it takes!"
Japan was, unfortunately, somewhat of a let-down in the JDM auto motive eye-candy department. i did see a number of surf's (4runner) and tons of cars, but precious few other things. one or two prados (the older one), but the coolest thing was all the diesels running around... makes me seriously consider importing a half-cut and swapping one into my 4runner. Oh, lots of vans too. those are apparently the "suv" of japan, or okinawa at least.
#93 eh? [edit: ok, now it says #83? i saw the 93 too, and know we arent BOTH on crack...] hard to believe ive been here that long.... and i still dont have an FJC! ill probably hold off till the 08's come out, at the earliest, and see if they fix any of the little annoying stuff that makes me want to keep the 4runner...
thanks for the welcome, no big deal about the hi-jack, ive been here long enough to almost expect it!
P.S. I will be starting work on the engine rebuild (300K, dumba$$ PO) of my 4runner sometime next week-ish. ill post a link to pics and my progress thread (on another board most likely as its a 4runner, not an FJ) if anyone is interested... i should be out getting it dirty again within the month, YAY!

well, im coming from southern California, right between LA and Sand Diego, so horrendous traffic is something im fairly used to already, though from what i hear the DC metro area is about the only place in the country WORSE than SoCal so i may be hating life a bit...
Ill be working on the Base at Quantico, commuting probably 0430 ish, hopefully that will help with traffic a bit. If i can get into Base Housing ill be golden, but i still would almost rather buy, if only as an investment.
anyway, thanks for the input... like i said i know almost nothing about the area so anything you have could be helpful.

Quantico is within striking distance to the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean, and mountains. The GWNF is about 11/2 from there. Lots of camping hiking in the rocks, Elizabeth Furnace is about 1 hour from there also primitive camping, There are many rivers for fishing small mouth bass. About one hour from horse country in Fauquier County. Winter skiing (its not Colorado but pretty good at times). Lots of outdoor activities

I can only add to the above. Hatteras/Ocracoke is within 4 hours. Great fishing/wheeling on the beach. Old Rag mountain near Culpepper is close. Probably the best hiking destination in the state. Go in the late fall or winter as it's too crowded at other times. Lots and lots of great places in the mountains for hiking/camping. Be sure to check out Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. Just load up your gear and go. You'll find lots of places to camp. Sherando Lake, Crabtree Falls, Goshen all come to mind. Stay away from DC (District of Criminals) whenever you can. WELCOME to Virginia.

Take what man makes and use it,
But do not worship it,
For it shall pass.
If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do,
Chapels had been churches, and poor mans cottages, princes’ palaces.
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.

I moved to No VA five years ago. The traffic is bad, but other than that I really enjoy it. I'm sure you'll be able to find a place you really like. I live North of Quantico, near Bristow/Nokesville and it is a great area. Easy to get to Quantico from there via backroads. It's ~30min from my house, but there are many nice neighborhoods or places with land that are closer.
