Talking NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

Hey fellow South Easterns!

Since I can't get the FJ to the Australian outback this summer, I am in need some local help. I'm looking for some ideas for an upcoming vacation, preferably NC area unimproved roads/trails that are more expeditionary in nature than rock crawling. For instance, one of the most memorable off-road adventures I've had was taking an all off-road trip from Yucca Valley, CA up to Big Bear Lake, CA. You know, the kind of road where the neighbors post a sign that says "Trespassers Will Be Shot".

Mountains, Piedmont, or the Beach, or a road through all three!

Thanks!

Re: NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

I am happy to see another NC FJ that actually wants to get off the pavement.

Mtbcoach is in your area and is great resource for all things off-road. we went to Uwharrie NF a few weeks ago and had a blast. It sounds like you are looking for something more open. George Washington NF in Virgina is a lot of fun and I would go there more often if it were closer. The OBX is another place that would be great for a vacation and you can drive your FJ in the sand which is always fun.

I hope to see you on the next local run.

Re: NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

I'd second the Uwharrie suggestion - lots of forest roads and a network of trails that should be more than enough for a stock to mostly stock FJ... I wheeled my Grand Wagoneer (4" springs, locker, 33s, etc.) there and had a blast. I think it's about 90 minutes from you - near Troy, NC.

Re: NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

This is exactly the type of trip I'd love to hear about. I'm trying to put together a comprehensive Google Earth/Google Maps listing of 'destination' based off-road trips throughout America. I'm calling '4x4 across america' - America's Off Road Trail Project - Home. This is totally non-commercial, just looking to put together a good repository. I'll bookmark this post & see what you guys come up with.

Check out the Upstate Cruisers on IH8MUD.com (see my sig below). We are SC based TLCA chapter but have members in FL, GA, NC and SC. We've done a couple trips in the Cullowhee area of the Nantahala NF. It's what we call expedition style wheeling and we usually cover about 40 miles of trails over 3 days with camping each night.

Shane;
Wow, this is an extremely cool and helpful project / site, especially since so many folks are always wondering where they can still wheel these days. Have you considered PMing a Mod about putting a Sticky on this in the Trail Runs area? Just wondering, cuz it seems like more visibility would allow more Forum members to be aware of it, use it, and contribute Trail info?
Tanx!

Re: NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

I'd also like to second or third OBX as a couple folks mentioned. We're hoping to get a bunch of FJC's/ Toyota's there in Oct for OBX Beach Bash 4 - October 19-21
Obviously it's not for folks who are only into hardcore wheeling because there are no challenging obstacles. But it's great for folks who want to get away from civilization as we know it and relax/ wheel/ fish/ swim/ camp/ boat etc on vast open expanses of beach and ocean.

That sounds like a great trip. I would like to make the next one!

Speaking of upstate cruisers. There is a run at Uwharrie June 15th - 17th. I hope I can make it. You should try and make it too.

Re: NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

Hands down...you want expedition style...go to Cullowhee. Period. If you are a TLCA member, there's an article in the latest Toyota Trails about our last trip. And here are a few pics just to whet you appetite.

Here is the route we took...to give you an idea of the terrain.

Pics of the trip:
