Just booked a place in late Sept in Corolla NC. Looks like I'm going to finally get to drive on the beach. Does anyone local know if this area is open to exploration? I have looked on satellite imagery and it looks like tracks lead all over the area. I'll be there off season as well so I don't anticipate a lot of people in nearby homes. Also, can I drive the beach North into Virginia? Is beach driving permissible there? I love it that 4X4 is required to get to this house, no paved roads! I've just begun looking into the area but I've been to OBX before.
Been up there once, don't think you can really do much exploring. It's sand roads, not open country to drive around in. I think (cannot remember for sure) that there's a fence that separates NC and VA, but not 100% on that. Even if there is, there also might be a way through it. I never got that far north, just thinking I saw something about it during my research.
What you're allowed to do and what you can get away with might be different that time of year, but I think there are restrictions on getting too far off the beaten path. And there is a big ol' monster fence at the NC/VA border. You aren't getting on VA sand without going a long way around and/or getting in trouble.
