Newbie here, just got my 08' sandstorm 6 speed last week, and am looking for some "easy" trails, fire roads, etc around asheville. I'm actually in fairview, nc. I know about the big spots in tenn., but looking for something closer. I've only lived here a year, and this is my first 4x, so looking for a chance to get into 4low.
hey james i am just down the road from you reynolds, only trails close is lake powaton it goes from brevard road to mills river, and in the middle of the trail. road drive if you turn right it takes you to waynesville. best time to do this road to make it more offroad is when it is rainging hard or snowy
otherwise around here the other option is hot springs hope this helps.

Last weekend my wife and I drove over to The Smokies to see the elk. They are in the Catallochee Valley. Take exit 20 off I40 (Cove Creek). You can then drive on the Mount Sterling Road and cross I40 (exit 7) and take Cold Springs Creek Road to Max Patch. These are National Park Service and US Forest Service Roads. They are dirt roads and offer great vistas and insight tio Southern Appalachia at its best. They may not be the off road experience that some want but take along a camera and enjoy.

Been to Cataloochee Valley many times - it's beautiful hiking country, and the elk re-introduction program is great. But take it slow and be careful on the single mountain road leading to it & from it. It's become such a popular tourist destination that those blind turns can be deadly with all the yahoos in minivans packed with the wife and 6 kids rounding them too wide. Personally, I wouldn't take anything that wasn't 4WD on that road. But every year you'll see some bozo from NJ or NY doing it in a rusted out, overloaded ford tarus with sagging springs.
there is soo many backroads and switchbacks here, a guy doesn't know where to start. I have the opportunity being in a service truck roaming just to find places, to see some places that will take you back to the 1940's and there is people in a small town out there in those mountains in places you would not imagine.. cool stuff. a different way of life, i have found no where else i have been in the usa.
