Re: OBX Beach Driving

We are heading down to Ocracoke in June. Hopefully they do not ban the beach driving.

We have been driving on the beach down there since 98. Never stuck once. Here are some basic tips;
- Air down the tires, 18psi seems to work good.
- Make sure you have decent tires.
- Stay off the dunes!
- Keep your vehicle out of the water, lots of soft sand under there.
- Watch out for drop-offs and washouts when driving along the waterline.
- Respect parked vehicles, don't drive between them and the waterline(unless they are way up on shore).
- Watch your speed, there always seems to be kids and pets around.

Enjoy the trip

The best beach to drive in OBX is north of the town called Corolla (north of Duck). My wife and I got married there in 2007, the morning of I did a little wheeling at that beach. It was a blast but the sand is really soft.
That's too far north for us. We really like it in Avon. We go in late September when there is hardly anyone there. It's almost like having the place to ourselves.

Re: OBX Beach Driving

so we are down here now. Went out today and didn't put her in 4L b/c I ddn't think I needed to. We didn't go far and when we stopped we smelled something, like something in the drive train got too hot. On the way out I put her in 4L and had no problems. I'm hoping that the smell was out imagination. Any idea what could have happened? We're heading back out tomorrow.

Btw, passed a nice fj40 ok the drive down. Wish I'd cross paths with that guy as it looked sweet hat little of it I saw.

don't worry about 4L , 4H will do fine on the beach. the fj has plenty of power you don't need the gearing.If if appears to be straining air down to 20psi. you should have any problems in the avon area as far as getting stuck unless you are playing. relax and enjoy thats a nice area.
