Trip to Virginia Beach

So is it possible to drive the FJ on the beach. I looked online and found something about perimits to do this in VA? But couldn't figure out exactly where this was even allowed looked closer to MD

And if it is possible do you have to air down the tires to keep from getting stuck?

Most often I end up a chick's beach (sp)

Full On;
As you may know, if you're lookin for some major beach area to wheel on you'd be better off going to the Outer Banks in NC. See this thread:
Anybody up for the OBX this weekend?
Most of the VA Beach beaches only allow bicycle and foot traffic.

I'm not sure about Virgina Beach. I grew up on Chincoteague Island, VA. They let you drive on the beach there with a permit. As long as you have decent tires and 4x4 they will let you wheel it there.

I thought you were only looking at the immediate VABeach area before. The Eastern Shore area in your link is mostly in MD, but you can easily get there from here via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ($12 toll). I've been there, but haven't driven the beach there yet. Looks like another good FJ excursion possibility!

I was there many years ago. The island there is Assiteague aka Bare Assiteague there was a lot of topless sunbathing going on then.

FullOn - Like Brian said, the Outer Banks is your best bet. There's no beach driving in VB and good luck if the cops catch you - this place has become a police state!!

You can head south to Oregon Inlet or the point on Cape Hatteras, but my favorite place is Carova Beach. Once you get to Kitty Hawk over the bridge, go north through Duck and Corolla until the road ends. Then it's 4wd only up to the VA border - probably 15+ miles. You can drive the beach, or hit the backroads (all unpaved) up in Carova.

A couple words of advice:

1. Drop your air pressure to 15-18 PSI once you're off the road. This is the best thing you can do.

2. If you have A-Trac, do NOT engage it in the sand. It's great for other offroad terrains, but not sand. Rear diff is good.

3. When you come to any intersection on the backroads, slow down and look for knuckleheads in trucks or on ATV's. Lot's of near misses...

4. Bring what you need including fuel - there is nothing, zero retail food, gas, etc. north of Corolla - and that's the way we want it to stay!

Have fun!

LOL!! Yep. Good times on Assateague. Especially during the pony swim season every summer. The year round population is around 8,000 but in the summer there is over 65,000 tourists crowed on a 3 mile by 8 mile island on the Atlantic. Ah, tourists girls. **Day Dreaming** I miss my old Chevy K5 a little now. I had a lot of fun on the beach in more ways than one.
