AZFJ: Planning ahead

I have family coming Aug8-21st...I plan on doing a trip to Sedona, Dbacks game, taking them out to eat at various places, etc but with them being here for 2 weeks I think I need some more ideas. You guys have any suggestions? I don't mind driving distances, but my dad is in his mid 70's so I don't think he'd be up for driving any farther than 2-3 hours.

Also, right after my parents leave on the 21st, my roommates son is here until the 26th. Would anyone be up for an easier run thats more scenic but offers a little bit of challenge. Maybe even a night run? I'd even be game for going some day during the week if anyone had time off and weren't doing anything. He's 13 and has never been wheeling before so I know he'll have a blast doing whatever. I was thinking of maybe even doing the Bradshaw Mountain run that I posted about before, or something up near Payson as we might be taking him up to our friends cabin which is close to there.

And lastly, I got the backcountry adventures book on Friday and spent the weekend looking through it. Any of you guys think you'd be game for doing El Camino Del Diablo this fall? Book says its a 2 day trip and that you get to cross a lava flow. Looks like a lot of fun, but the book suggest going in larger groups because you're close to the border and its very remote.

I've always wanted to do El Camino Del Diablo but from what I've learned, you would definitely need a large group, permission from the Air Force or something to cross an area of land, and protection because...like you said...it's very remote. Check this out: El Camino del Diablo article about the Expedition Portal trip in Southern Arizona

We would be up for something......but we only have walkie....no talkie....

Greasewood Flats is always a good place to grab a bite & chill. Are you looking for place to go wheeling or eat & entertainment?

When we do El Camino I will be there...and the group WILL be large/licenced/and armed.....Carrie I'm glad you're still interested in that run...I was afraid I scared you off when you asked to do that run so early in your training

Special Ed...I know we haven't met... but...as my name sugests...I'm home all day with the kids...they love the desert as much as I do....we can take any run any time you want....I went out last night with myself and son Ty and my friend Mike and his daughter....I keep my truck fully trail ready at all times so I can go anytime....I know plenty of runs from 1 hour to 6 hours round trip from our neighborhood......just a thought....my kids are 7 and 3...

Your dad is 70?.....Take him anywere he wants!!!

Just some economical places to go when family comes in. I have a lot of family from PA. that comes to visit alot, and not in a position to do a lot of high dollar entertaining. Have fun with your family

Re: AZFJ: Planning ahead

like Kurt (homedadr) I often have weekdays off so I would be up for a run...
Table Mesa into Cave Creek gives some nice views and you can stop towards the end at 7 springs..then make a late lunch at the satisfied frog for something interesting..
Night runs would be cool since I work nights and I need to play with the 12 lights I have now
my son´s are 9 & 16 and they both would be happy to join, the 16yr old is out of school on fridays so he could go on a day run with the 13yr old no prob.
Keep us posted on the thoughts...
Oh and I am way in for a fall El Camino del Diablo and I am pretty sure a few others like RockFJ would also.. I like the sound of a multiday expedition style camp and drive trip`...I will be doing copper canyon in mexico before too long and baja also.
enjoy

Re: AZFJ: Planning ahead

3D, I still have your talkie, I'll get it to you, I promise. Also, to clarify, I'm just looking for cool touristy (thought not too touristy) places to take them, more remote places are fine. There's 7 of them coming and I'd just like to show them some places that really reflect how awesome AZ is. Plus they've all said in the past that they would like to move out here as the MI economy is falling fast, and my parents need a nice place to retire in where they can go camping and take it easy.

To Kurt and Lance and anyone else that is home most days during the week, I too am home most days as I work out of the house. Perhaps we should plan weekday trips more often! We'll definitely have to hook up when the fam and my roommates son are in town for some trips. I know they'd all love it, though we might have to take it a little easy.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations thus far, I'm taking notes. Cliffy, I'm sending you a pm. I have an AZ guide book too that I got at Borders which has some nice ideas as well. Phoenicks - FamousDaves is delicious, I was just there a couple of weeks ago.

And it sounds like El Camino Del Diablo is a hit! I think it'll be really cool, plus as long as we have a larger group, I doubt we'll have to worry about anything. It shows some trails off that trail as well, so I'm sure we could make a full weekend out of it. I was just thinking more into fall as I bet it'd be really hot right now.
