Just trying to figure out if we are going to have a group of people that would want to leave the condo and find things to do in Mexico!?!? If so here are some things you can do!
“Beach Fun”
We will have a condo on Sandy Beach, this is the best beach to be on in Mexico!! You will be able to walk out of our back door, past the fire pit and run to the ocean…In the morning we will hear seagulls, sea lions and also view dolphins from our patios!
“Ocean Fun”
Sun’n’Fun – An American-run dive shop on Juarez at the entrance to the Old port. They will charter boats for various excursions if enough people are interested. The shop offers the following:
Fishing Trips (1/2 – Full Day all inclusive US$50-100)
Whale Watching (3 Hr. US $35.00;in season)
Sunset Cruises (2 Hr. US $25.00)
Guided Dives (5 Hr. US $50.00)
Among many other things!
SUN N' FUN HOME
“Ocean Life Fun”
Marine Biology Centers (Cetmar and Cedo)
Two research centers are located just outside of puerto penasco. The center for Technogical Sea Studies (CETMAR) is 4km from the centro on Las Conchas. The Intercultural Center for the study of deserts and oceans (CEDO) is 3 km farther down the road.
CETMAR operates a small aquarium consisting of a small aquarium consisting of single room with a series of somewhat dirty open tanks. Some visitors my be distressed by the cramped conditions in which the aquariums keep animals such as the large sea turtles and the sea lions at the back, which visitors are allowed to feed. There are also open pools on the floor, from which the curator may fish out dripping invertebrates for your viewing pleasure. For better or worse, CETMAR provides a rare opportunity to see these creatures and many smaller species such as crabs, shrimp, sea horses, snails and sea urchins in close quarters.
CEDO gives free guided tours to its wet lab and has a 17m whale skeleton standing outside. CEDO is currently working on its visitor center which is uniquely constructed using only sand, cement and recycled materials. In the meantime, tourists can enjoy the small botanical garden. Since we have our own transportation we can detour to the Morua Estuary, which is home to one of puerto penasco’s best kept secrets; a small oyster farm where you can enjoy a remarkable view, delicious ceviche, and oysters so fresh that you have to remember to tip the seawater out of them before eating!
“4x4ing Fun” – I have never been here, so I will not volunteer being your guide!!
El Pinacate - Guides are strongly recommended.
If you do decide to go it alone, 4WD High clearance is recommended! WERE COVERED! 48 kilometers north of puerto penasco on Mex.8 lies the El Pinacate volcanic preserve, one of the largest and most spectacular biospheres in the world. Created in June 1993 to limit rock excavation and protect endangered species, El Pinacate encompasses more then 16,000 sq km. and extends from the Sea of Cortez to the Az border. Within this space, the landscape ranges from vast dunes to nine huge craters, the most spectacular of which El Elegante, is 1600m across and 250m deep. The visitors lasting memory, however is likely to be the awesome emptiness and almost lunar strangeness of the volcanic desert, strewn with ask and pockmarked with around 400 cinder cones.
Visitors are required to register at the Visitors Center, the group of orange-roofed buildings on the left of Mex. 8 coming from puerto penasco.
