Steamboat Springs is the best!! Great town, the Steamboat Grand is a very nice hotel and the skiing does not get any better. If you want to stay somewhere and try different mountains, Frisco is a nice place. You are close to Brek, Copper, Keystone, A-Basin.
But for the family, it's hard to beat Steamboat.

The past 2 years I've hit Heavenly in Lake Tahoe...wow. If the crazy views and scenery don't get you..the 8-10 ft base, powder, amazing tree skiing, and warm temperatures definitely will. Theres something for everyone..and Mott/Kilibrew Canyons are wicked fun.
If you made me pick out of all of them..I'd pick Heavenly.
Excellent choice! I still count Heavenly as my favorite US resort. Maybe it's because of the fantastic scenery, the sheer size of the place, or that I grew up skiing there. I ski exclusively at The Canyons here in Utah, which is the largest in the state, but it doesn't hold a candle to Heavenly. The Colorado resorts are extremely nice as well, and I would rate any of them higher than anything here in Utah, but still below Heavenly.
I would highly highly recommend coming here to Ogden, Utah. Finding a nice affordable place to stay is really easy and you are 30 minutes from three great resorts. 1) Snowbasin, the 2002 Olympic site for DH. I get a season pass there every year. Very nice. 2) Powder Mountain. The nation's largest ski resort by acreage. You will find fresh powder weeks after a storm!! Another personal favorite - it has a nice mom and pop feel. 3) Wolf Mountain is a great quick and easy place for kids - especially for a quick and easy session of night skiing.
You are also within 1.5 hour drive to all the other world class ski resorts in Utah. Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, Alta, Canyons, Park City, and Deer Valley.
Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you all the info you need. I would love to be you point of contact here and show you what Ogden has to offer!!
I'm in Alabama, the family and I are planing a trip to either Co, or Ut. We will be heading out the week after Christmas. What are some good resorts in those areas.
It depends on you budget, Ogden area is cheapest, but after skiing amenities are limited (resturaunts, bars, etc). Park city is best for amenities and large resorts, shopping, resturaunts, bars etc. but the snow is usually crappy during Christmas (but that all varies from year to year and they make snow) and it gets pricey. My parents have a house on the top of main street an is within very close walking to many resturaunts and bars, but they do command a premium and it sells out fast. For pure skiing, the little and big cottonwood resorts are the best. They get the most and best snow and have good food/bars, and great accomodations. If you want to look into renting a house for a week in PC, PM me and I will get you in touch with the details. If it is rented already you can look to next year. At the house, there is a free shuttle that will pick you up just outside the front door and take you to any PC resorts.
I live in Nashville but lived a year in Breckenridge in the late 90's (snowboarding). The drive isn't too bad. The town is fun for adults and kids. You can also hit keystone on the same ticket.
