Need ski help.

I'm in Alabama, the family and I are planing a trip to either Co, or Ut. We will be heading out the week after Christmas. What are some good resorts in those areas.

Cool Re: Need ski help.

If I were to recommend a place for a good time all around I'd say Breckenridge, Keystone, Winter Park, or Copper. They're all really great resorts with pretty varying terrain. Breckenridge probably offers the best all around entertainment value b/c of it's awesome night life and great shopping etc, not to mention having 516 Acres of terrain. For a good idea of what Breck and Keystone offer go here:

Snow.com

For another site that you can get some good mountain stats go here:

Colorado Ski Report | SkiReport.com

I guarantee you there will be people saying to go to Aspen or Vail but honestly it's just not worth the money you'll spend. BUT, this is just my .02...good luck with the choices!

I agree, I would even add A-Basin. Keystone, A-Basin, and Breck are all within about a 30 minute drive from each other. I usually get the all mountain pass or the liberty, or work sometimes picks up the tab for our passes, depending on my winter schedule. But they are all great, plus A-Basin has some nice back country type of skiing, and Breck has that awsome high lift to to the top which makes for a nice long run and Keystone has some good bowls on the back side.

Re: Need ski help.

The resorts here are Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude are all world famous. You can go to Park City which is REALLY good skiing but REALLY pricey to stay in.

Re: Need ski help.

I love Steamboat Springs. It's quite different from the Aspen or Vail type resorts. It has a kind of hometown cowboy flavor that I like.

Smile Re: Need ski help.

Check out Ski packages for Durango Mountain Resort, formerly knows as Purgatory. Most hotels offer free transportation from the airport and back, and nightly shuttles run into downtown Durango for dining, shopping, etc.. Durango is only 70 miles from Ouray where the FJ Summit is held.

You can take a train ride on the Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway. If you do this I would look into doing it just one way. Taking it to and from makes for a long day. I also recommend taking the family on a sleigh ride or snow mobile tour or both.

I used to live in Durango for many years and I know you will not be disappointed. In fact check out the college there. Durango is quite the place to attend college. Moab and Lake Powell are only 3 hours away. Denver is a only a 6 hour drive. I would consider Durango as the recreation capital of Colorado. I can say that because I live outside of Boulder and grew up in Denver. Rafting, kayaking, hiking, fishing, Mtn Biking, Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, climbing, and of course off roading. All within minutes of town. The town has a real dynamic community feel to it as well. Not too many towns in Colorado have all that in their backyard.

Durango would be the ultimate place to be an FJ owner, or if your kids are in college there, an FJ visitor. Some of the most amazing mountain passes are there as well as Moab just a few hours away.

The other recommendations are pretty good as well if you are starting out flying into Denver.

You can message me anytime if you would like more info about Durango.

Have fun!

J

Any of those mentioned are great...there is also Snowbasin and Powder Mtn. up in Ogden valley...and most of the resorts are about 30 minutes from the airport. Check with where you are staying, some of the resorts have a ski free the same day you arrive...so fly in early..take a 30 minute drive and ski for free!

You can also ski at The Canyons, which is near Park City. I believe Deer Valley is still skiers only, if you are into that. Alta is skiers only, but you can have a combined pass with Snowbird (which allows boarders). Tough to pick a favorite, but I think I'd have to say Snowbasin. Very nice since the Olympics were held there!

check out
Utah Ski Resorts | Utah.com

I'm sure the CO people will protest here... but 2 CO avid skiers I used to work with [reluctantly] admitted that Utah snow is better.

Our resorts in CA are pretty good, but if you like powder, Utah is your choice. have fun!

Re: Need ski help.

I'll be heading out west the week after Christmas too...to snowboard. (skiing..ugh )

I've been to park city twice and it's great. Really high quality resort with lots of varying runs and terrain. Olympic terrain parks, nice groomers, an all around good place to board. (ski..sorry.) Even though I broke my arm there on my first visit..it's still a great place...not to mention the town in itself is great.

The past 2 years I've hit Heavenly in Lake Tahoe...wow. If the crazy views and scenery don't get you..the 8-10 ft base, powder, amazing tree skiing, and warm temperatures definitely will. Theres something for everyone..and Mott/Kilibrew Canyons are wicked fun.

I made a trip to Big Sky like 5 years ago..and I won't comment on anything except it was way too cold. -20 something. too cold to be worried about snowboarding.

If you made me pick out of all of them..I'd pick Heavenly. Simply because you can cut off a run into the trees, board for 10 minutes in straight virgin powder, and pop out on another run. I'm trying to get back to Heavenly..but I'm looking at Jackson Hole too..everything I've read says theres some sick expert terrain at JH.

who knows..maybe I'll run in to ya
