Re: AZFJ's request own category

I, for one, have been remiss in my posting duties. I feel unworthy to post on matters FJC while I'm driving a POS rental car. I'm told that there is a possibility that I'll have the thing back by Friday. Nobody hold their breath...

Re: AZFJ's request own category

I'm tooling up my garage for working on sections of the crawler project. I won't have room to work on the actual vehicle in there, but I'll have space for doing things like pulling apart an axle, changing the ring and pinion gears and putting in a locker. I think I've found the right front axle, and I'm working on acquirring a rear. Once I have both, I'll plunk down for the lockers, gears, and installation kits. When I get the things apart, I'll be looking at the spindle bearings, hubs and brakes too. I anticipate quite a few days of work in sprucing up two axles.

In the garage, I'm making space and getting tooled up. I bought a compressor for air tools, and I bought some nice air tools. Sean told me that the compressor will be loud, and I'm going to try to build some sonic containment for it that doesn't impede air flow. I also need to consider running a dedicated circuit with lots of amperage since it's considered poor form to run a big fat extension cord from the laundry room.

I found a dead mouse under some boxes. Now I have to go get a bunch of mouse traps. Linda is mildly freaking out. Sometimes its better to know less than more...

I'm going to avoid starting a thread on the crawler build up till it's far enough along that there will be some significant steps of progress. The real-life speed will be so freakin' slow, that it won't warrant even a weekly post. I'll wait till there's a finished frame with suspension, axles, wheels, engine and transmission before I start a thread post pictures. I'll show the tube-frame superstructure build in real-time. I'm thinking it's a year before I'm even close.

Re: AZFJ's request own category

I'm not sure where this post figures in asking for our own category. If I take into account who posted it, all of this makes sense. This is exactly why we need our own category. We ramble on with a message. We also ramble on with a thought of a message. Sometimes we just ramble. Why would we want such rambling not contained to a specific area. Others will know, when they visit our category, to be prepared to either think more, or just shake their heads. If these ramblings are just sporatically posted all over the forum, it would just confuse what deems to be semi normal people. We must be isolated from the general forum populous.
IMHO

Re: AZFJ's request own category

The problem here, Don, is that we actually all talk to eachother with reasonable frequency, and not just on these forums. The result is that there may be a conversation that pops up on one thread, and then continues on another. It may start on the phone and end here on the net, or vice versa. It may even involve email! I knew you'd be all over this thread, and therefore I left you info about the crawler project... which I know you're curious about. What's the odds that someone wouldn't suggest that I start a thread about the build once I mention it a few times? I assess the odds at 100%, and therefore I respond in advance that it's too early... till then, I plan to hijack threads right and left to entice my friends to help out.

Tomorrow morning I plunk down for the front axle. Over the week, I'll be looking at rear axles... no hurry. Once I have both in my garage, I'll buy gears etc.

Next weekend, I'll be carting the project over to a privately owned yard where my antics will be tolerated because they'll be dwarfed by the hotrodders who spend most of their time there. I'll take the rig down to a frame and cart the frame back to my house for tinkering.

If you want to, I could use a few extra hands for unbolting things off of the frame! Any of the AZFJ clan who wants to participate in carnage is more than welcome. There will most certainly be beer involved.
