Utah: Transporting Firearms??

Sorry for asking here but I'm hoping a Utah local can answer a question regarding transporting firearms in your state.

Packing.org has been down for months now....any other good sources for this type of info?

I am heading to Moab shortly with my SBR and a few pistols with high cap mags.

Does UT state law require the weapons to be unloaded and/or locked/unavailable to the driver? Does this also apply to rifles or just handguns?

I have a CCW for AZ but UT doesn't reciprocate unless I take an additional course.....so I know concealed carry is out of the question. Just wondering about transporting loaded firearms while in transit. IMO, there's no point in having a firearm if it's unloaded or unaccessible.

TIA,
Sean

Re: Utah: Transporting Firearms??

Sean, I'm not a local but this is the state of the law:

Utah generally prohibits the carrying of a loaded firearm: 1) in or on a vehicle; 2) on any public street; or 3) in a posted prohibited area. Utah Code Ann. § 76-10-505(1).

Utah Admin. Code § R651-612-1 generally prohibits the use or possession of firearms in any park in the Utah park system, unless the weapon is unloaded and encased. Concealed firearms permit holders are exempt from this prohibition

That's the bottom line. You can transport it legally if the clip is out of the weapon or if a round is not "in battery". That applies to all firearms.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll practice a little civil disobedience.

I just got back from Moab. What a fantastic place! I was armed but did not mention it to anyone and no one asked.

I carried that way the whole time I lived in Utah for 6 years. Don't ask, don't tell. If you ever really need it, carrying illegally will be the least of your problems anyway.

This site may help. It all depends on where you want to go. I know that it is a No-No to take into arches or other N.P.'s, but BLM land is pretty open as long as it isn't chambered.
