I am planning a little R & R trip to Canyon de Chelly next week and wondered if anyone has been there and could give me some tips about visiting there? My wonderful wife Sally passed away last week, and am taking a few days to get my head screwed back on before returning to work. Any info would be appreciated Thanks, Nick
Sorry to hear of the passing of your wife. I can't imagine my beloved of 30 years leaving me.
It's been a few years since we've been there, but we have clients that say that the Thunderbird Lodge is very nice. I also think the hike down to White House ruin is very beautiful. It is very peaceful at the canyon and we enjoy it much more than The Grand.
Pm me if you have more questions. I was born here and I help direct many people through the year on their travels.
Peace be with you, Alston

I don't have any information on the canyon but I wanted to pass on my condolences . I hope your reflections will be some comfort in a very difficult time. Keep your eyes on some runs you may have interest in. Maybe just being around like minded people will help fill some time that would just be filled with sadness. I know the AZFJ group all feel the same way.
sincerely
Don
Canyon de Chelly is a beautiful place to sit and contemplate life, reflect and remember. Access to the canyon is limited. If you want to see more than just what's along the walking paths, I recommend that you get to the ranger station / visitors center in the morning and hire a guide through the canyon. You provide the vehicle and the native guide will take you down into the canyon. It is the best way to see it.

Very sorry to hear about this.
Among the places one could go, Canyon de Chelly is one that I might well choose to go in a time such as you're in right now. It's a quiet and beautiful place. Take the time to walk down into the canyon, if you can, early in the morning light.

I agree with the above. And the Navajo guide will give you a perspective of it that no one else can (and history). It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in this country, and I have been to MANY Nat'l Parks. You chose the perfect place to go. Canyon de Chelly Navajo guided Tours

The hike down to White House Ruin is quite nice. Another thing you can do is go to the visitors center and hire a Navaho guide and drive down to the bottom and take a tour of the canyon in your own vehicle, you'll learn a great deal more about the place and there are far less people there than on the loop at the top.
Thanks to all of you for your words of condolence at this time. Yes I am planning to hire a Navajo guide and take the F J into the canyon. Sally and I had been planning a trip into the canyon, then she got sick and we could'nt travel. I will be taking her with me in spirit. Thanks again.
