Utah 4-Wheel Drive Association supports National Public Lands Day
On Saturday, September 29th, the Utah 4-Wheel Drive Association (U4WDA) and twenty-three individual clubs organized their largest National Public Lands Day Service Project in the association’s history. This nationally recognized program has grown to be one of the largest hands-on volunteer efforts, to improve and enhance public lands. In 2006, nearly 1,100 projects were completed and 100,000 participants volunteered across the country.
This year, U4WDA recruited 340 volunteers gathering at 14 locations throughout the state of Utah. Each volunteer came equipped with supplies, work clothes and a ‘can do’ attitude to give back to our local communities and support keeping public lands open. Projects were planned in every quadrant of the state by working with the local Federal and State land agencies insuring the necessary equipment, tools and disposal services would be available for the volunteers. Each volunteer received a free special edition T-shirt and a public land pass for future entrance in any fee area. The T-shirts were a result of local sponsorship by Teraflex Manufacturing, Teraflex Plus, Six States Distributors and Tom Wood’s Custom Drive Shafts.
This year’s projects focused on removal of over twelve tons of trash, marking and repairing over 15 miles of trails, installing new signs, erecting and repairing over 400 feet of fence and building Information Kiosks in high use areas. Projects were not limited to areas popular to the 4X4 community but were cooperative efforts with other recreation groups having common interests in promoting access to our public lands. Other such projects involved a local Hiking club to work on a single-track trail and another sponsored a 4X4 Camp to educate the community in responsible OHV / 4X4 use at their County Fairground.
