Good Starter Trail; Colorado

I purchased a FJ last July, and would really like to "spread it's wings" this summer. I am looking for somewhere near Colorado Springs to take it out and hone my offroading skills (which are about nil) without looking like too much of an idiot.

It is 4wd, A-Trac, and rear lockers with stock skid plate (which I hear are more for looks than function) and stock rock rails. I purchased the FJ with the intention of playin' in the mountains a bit. The wife will be in Honduras this summer, so it would be a good time for me and the kids to tear up the Toyota and get it fixed before she even knew what happened.

Re: Good Starter Trail; Colorado

Greetings & Welcome to the group!
We're always looking for more Co Springs FJers to wheel with. Check out Dirtopia for the trails in El Paso & Teller Counties:
http://dirtopia.com/wiki/El_Paso_County%2C_Colorado
http://dirtopia.com/wiki/Teller_County%2C_Colorado

The easy & close stuff is all off of rampart range road, and a few off of Old Stage road. We've done most of these trails multiple times, you'll have no problem with your FJ. If you're still running the stock dunlop tires you'll be limited to the easy & a few moderate trails.

Also checkout ColoradoFJs.com, we're very active.

Look forward to seeing you on the trail

Re: Good Starter Trail; Colorado

Thanks for the welcomes!!

My son (8) is probably one of the biggest FJ fans that I know. He probably won't know what to do with himself if he got around more than just mine on some trails. I was showing him some videos from YouTube of some FJs and he is ready to get out there.

Hey there. I had to comment when I saw the comment about the stock skid. My stock skid is hanging in the garage, an homage to my first trail runs. I got my FJ last March and bashed the hell out of the skid, enough to bend the bolts. It did it's job the first season.

I have done a few mild trails, and this is my first off-road vehicle. I still qualify as a newbie I think. You stated you wanted to hear about trails by Colorado Springs. I have done mine in the Front Range and Moab. If you go to

This Web site coming soon (or maybe this link: 4 x 4 Outdoor Forum - Index)

and look for the multitude of posts by Funrover. He lives in the Springs and knows alot of the trails.

Re: Good Starter Trail; Colorado

Yes, welcome aboard! Plenty of trails that are considered easy in this neck of the woods. There are also some nice ones up around Florissant and Lake George. Just take it easy and go slow and you'll be amazed at what the FJ can do.
