Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

I'm sure there are others like me...searched around and lurked the 4x4 forums but never found the answer they were looking for. Specifically for the FJ, in which order will you be adding things to your truck. Thanks in advance for your advice/help/suggestions.

Revtek lift kit 3"
ARB or equal w/winch
offroad Tires/steel wheels
rear steel bumper
rock rails (if you don't already have them)
Lights/cb radio
Appropriate tools for the trail/trail box, etc.

and anything I left out...

Re: Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

For all those in AZ that haven't already added the ATRAC switch (SEE 4x4 forum sticky for ATRAC installation instructions by wolfbak) -- I called power toyota today and ordered mine, there were no questions about whether or not I had ATRAC as an option etc. He simply ordered the part for me and said he would call me as soon as he had an idea of when it would be in.

Very simple, and easy to install. I would surf to the 4-5th page in that thread and read how surfponto did his, much easier!

Re: Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

AZ,

My list of current mods:

1) BFG A/T KO
2) A-Trac switch(on order from Trdparts4u.com)
3) CB Radio(yet to be installed)
4) Lift kit (waiting for it to show up)

Future Mods
1) On board air (maybe buy it tonight)
2) Recovery equipment (hi-lift, rec straps, etc)
3) Rock rails (can't decide whether to order them or fab them up myself)

Dream mods but most likely won't happen:
1) All Pro bumper with Warn winch.

Let me know when your A-Trac switch arrives.

Re: Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

Thanks for the input, much appreciated...

Did you know that Atilla Hunley has a connection on rock rails? I can't remember the price but I'm pretty sure it's a better deal than the oems.

Re: Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

IMHO, don't be too quick to make mods, for two reasons; First the trucks are very new and a lot of new cool stuff is coming out for them. So you get a widget, the only one on the market and a month latter a much nicer ones come out from a couple of other vendors. This will always happen, but much more so with a brand new model.

Second, if you plan on wheeling it, go out with a local group and see what works in the area where you will be wheeling. What works in magazines, on the net, in clay back east may not work well in the desert! Case in point, BFG tires, if you go on a CSC run you will see lots of Nitto tires with good reason, they work much better than BFG's in the desert and are cheaper to boot.

I made the mistake of running right out and buying an ARB bumper for my rig. They are great for running over kangaroos, shopping carts and deer, but not the best in rock. They are too big and the bottom has an air dam profile that hangs up big time in rock. The FJC team guys had the same comments about them.

Re: Arizona 4x4 add-ons/advice thread

1. recovery gear - always go prepared for the worst (includes tools/water/food etc)
2. atrac - easy and cheap
3. armor - don't leave home without it. lifting / tires will get to places where you wish you had armor first.
4. comms - if you don't have it, you're missing out on the fun.
5. lift
6. tires
7. lights (if you do a lot of night runs)
8. dual battery
9. winch
10. your first child and your second child (here's where your mind goes wild and you start buying everything!)

you get the pic. whatever you do I would make sure you have recovery gear because you'll need it at every state of the game. after that 2 and 3 are a close one but I would do 2 and 3 prior to lift/tires. The key logic behind this is the fact that you will appreciate your FJ more by taking it out virtually stock and understanding the limitations of the vehicle. once you get acclimated to the FJ you can then venture by adding some improvements (lift/tires) to gain more confidence in doing harder trails. If you don't, you'll miss out on the appreciation for your fj.

good luck!

A blanket, bedroll, water, so you can help the Hummer Crew when you go for their rescue team.
