Utah HD Polyethyline Skids get together

So, in an effort to not hijack FJ Craigs' thread anymore (sorry FJ Craig) I am making a thread about these skids. So, who is interested in getting together and doing these? For those of you that don't know about these take a look here. I think for our climate and some light duty wheeling these are the way to go. They seem pretty durable and it's cheap (comparatively) to replace. I think that if we can get together as a group and get a template made up we can knock out at least a few of these in a weekend.

Since I live in an apartment I really don't have a place to do a project like this, so I would be willing to do the leg work of finding the material and even picking it up if need be. I have a Chevy pickup that I can use to fit the 4'x8' sheets in without a problem. With that being said I guess we also need someone to volunteer a place to do the work. So, I'll look around locally and see if I can find them, if not I'll see about getting us a price shipped to Utah. I would appreciate so pointers here if any of you guys have an idea of where to call to find this stuff.

So, who's in?? SKIBUMM, Just4Fun, and I have shown interest but I would like to get a few more of us together if we can. If this sounds like something you would like to do either post here or shoot me a pm. The more the merrier!!

I think I could persuade the wife to let me use my Garage. It is big enough just not super equiped. I have basic air tools, Most other hand tools especially a Hammer, and a floor jack. I just need to make sure and schedule it so I will be in town.

Sounds great! I'm in no hurry personally, I actually wouldn't mind waiting a while until the weather gets a little warmer. I'll start gathering places to call this weekend and try to get some prices together. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we can have a few more people interested and have a nice little meet and wrench!

Re: Utah HD Polyethyline Skids get together

Hey Tibbs,

This sounds like a great idea and I would be very interested as well. I have a two car garage, but my tools situation is slim. I would gladly host it at my place but people would need to bring along some tools. My driveway is pretty wide as well so we would have tons of space.

As far as it relates to that thread, one thing we have here in Utah is lots of rocks so we could provide some valuable feedback on that thread for how well it holds up. And if someone could get one in before the Spring Fling and beat it up down there, that would be a best case scenario.

Re: Utah HD Polyethyline Skids get together

Alrighty, so far I have found 2 places locally that carry the HDPE and the cheapest is about $150. I guess we just need to figure out a time and place to do this. Also, anyone know what to use to cut this stuff with? I have access to skill saws, jig saws, dremels, pretty much anything we would need. I just need to know what to bring ahead of time so I can gather these tools up.

Re: Utah HD Polyethyline Skids get together

I've got a jigsaw as well. I would imagine this would be good enough to cut them using a sheet metal type blade. My availablilty is pretty open. The weekend of Spring Fling is no good, perhaps the weekend after that?

Or if we want to organize sooner, we could do it this weekend?

Re: Utah HD Polyethyline Skids get together

This weekend is not availble to me it is the second to last weekend for skiing. I can do it on the 19th. I need to clean out the garage but when it is done we should be able to have at least 3 FJs in there and working on them we could ge 5 but would be a bit tight to work on. Besides the Sheet of HDPE what other parts would we need any bolts I probably have but if we need any metal we would need to get that before hand. Kasey would you be able to PM CaptRik and see what he used as far as bolts and how many and what size and if he used any metal for cross bracing or to start the shhet out up front? I thinkif we prepare right we could knock a bunchout pretty fast once we got rolling.

PS I was watchinga 4x4 show thie weekend and it was really interesting thatalmost every rock buggy had this stuff on the bottom of it too.
