Re: Utah Cruisers Run: Great Salt Lake Ghost Towns, May 18th 2008
Hey dlister, before mine went out I did not notice anything. We were doing Fins and things and had just finished a fin. We were actually down in a sandy road area and I heard a thump-thump noise. I got out looked under the vehicle. Everything looked fine. I went to the back and a small shovel had come out of the rear cargo door bag. I figured that was it. Took off again and the thump continued, then I started to feel a distinct pull with the sound. It felt like it was on the passenger side. I had someone else drive slowly and I looked under the vehicle as it felt like something was binding. Nothing to be seen. We kept driving, hoping/praying it was not what I feared it was. It got worse and the thumps turned into a distinct popping sound with a stronger pull. I tried putting it in 2 wheel drive, and that was worse as I believe it is still pulling/turning that axle with the broken differential gear ring but without any help from the other differential.
It got really bad when unloading it at the dealer. It sounded like a gun shot with each revolution of the ring.
It seems (if I understand correctly) as long as the rear wheels are turning, you are going to be fighting that broken ring and any metal/teeth that are in there wreaking havoc?
I don't think that bouncing itself is indicative of anything. As you know, severe bouncing can break things, but bouncing is not the result of differential damage as far as I can tell. If you break the differential, it will be know pretty quickly.

Re: Utah Cruisers Run: Great Salt Lake Ghost Towns, May 18th 2008
OK, folks have mentioned maybe hitting the spiral jetty as a side trip off our route. I looked it up and plotted a route, from the closest point we come to it. It's 11 miles each way so adds 22 miles. The total day from salt lake back to salt lake is 360 miles. We are already at 184 miles between gas stops. I made it with a couple of gallons to spare last year. I guess if we all carried extra gas and didn't hang around there much we would be back to the valley by about 9 or 10pm with this side trip. I've got it plotted and saved as another route on my gps so if you guys want to give it a try we could. There are a real maze of roads around the route but if my topo is correct we will probably find it. We have some choices along the way about how long to stop for lunch and where. And how long we want to explore and dig through the ruins of the old towns along the way too. Having done this run before I'll let you guys know if we've spent to long in one place or another and have to blast through the next few to make it back home before my babysitter stages a revolt. I'd guess she'd be ok until 9 or 10. Just throwing out the facts about time, not trying to discourage at all .

You can of course borrow one, no need to buy. Between Kathy, Casey and myself we probably have enough for everyone. You did however remind me just now to charge them. They're still in my backpack from Moab last month.

Scott,
That would be great to borrow one so I can hear the audio part of the tour as we go around the lake.
Its looking like the weather will cooperate and be in the mid to upper 80s. I guess if I'm running the A/C abit, then I'll for sure want to bring along an extra 5 gallons of gas.

I use the National Geographic Topo software for Utah to plan most trips. Anyone want me to post up our track, routes, and waypoints. I guess they'd come out in .gpx format which you could import into other gps software as well.
