cnckart is an old sn that I have had for years. It comes from when I used to race shifter karts. Shifter karts are an absolute blast! But with any motorsport it isn't a cheap one. It's no where near the level of cars on the money scale, but it isn't a poor mans sport. I had to give it up about 7 yers ago due to being a poor man I now have the means to get back into it. I won't race often because that is where it takes the money to compete. I just have missed the sport and want to go turn laps on practice days.
If you aren't familiar with shifter karts they use a honda cr125 dirt bike engine. This gives them a sequential 6 speed trans. They make about 35 horsepower, but when the driver and kart together only weigh 385 lbs. that's a pretty good power to weight ratio. They have 4 wheel hydraulic disk brakes and are liquid cooled. They will do 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds, and can pull upwards of 3 g's through the turns. On with the build!
I found a screaming deal on a used, but low time and clean 2001 PTK Monterey chassis. It's a pretty complete roller. IMG_0547 by cnckart, on Flickr
The engine had thrown a chain at some point in time. The cases were good, but had some slight damage. After tearing it down i had to do a little welding and machining. IMG_0569 by cnckart, on Flickr
And here it is all torn down. I have 90% of the parts needed to put it back together. IMG_0570 by cnckart, on Flickr
This engine should be done within a couple of weeks! I will post pictures of the build as I progress. I am really looking forward to this!
I've always wanted to do something like this. Last summer my wife started tracking her BMW and it is really expensive. Maybe someday I can play around too. Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

As am I! This is totally a budget build. I plan on having a track worthy kart for about $2000 bucks. Not too bad for that level of performance. Maybe I'll bring it to summit!

Make sure you put some knobbies on it! You know... you might have just found a way to reuse the FJ's stock tires when people upgrade.

My neighbor used to race shifter carts. He was talking about building another too. Ill show him this
Trying to get him to buy an FJ so we can go wheeling. He said something about a getting a "hummer" and I said go see the wife and when your done, we'll look for an FJ

Do show him. If you are patient you can put together a kart pretty cheap.
A Lap around Laguna Seca. This isn't me obviously, but this 125 shifter kart is only about 30 seconds slower than an Indy car on the same course. Keep in mind this is a car track, not a Kart track. I can't imagine taking the cork screw in a shifter. Lap Around Laguna Seca Raceway - CR125 - Stock Moto Shifter Kart on Vimeo
Those Busa karts are insane! The only place you could really use it would be place like Laguna. One of my favorite tracks as well. Once the kart is done I'll get a go pro, Can't put a whole camera system on a kart.
I hear ya. Seca is just so different from other places. The elevation change, the scenery and the turns. Some parts, if you got the line right, you can fly through without slowing at all. Other parts will really bit you if you are a little careless. It was fun watching that video!
