Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

sugar bowl report:

groomed trails were all fine. i didn't encounter many rocks on them, but stay away from the grooved area on juniper on mt. judah. not kept up.

mt. disney was fine except the east face was pretty balboa. market street and the nose were iced over...i didn't even try.

bottom line: we need more snow. a system is supposed to go through on thursday or friday...fingers crossed.

i got bored pretty early and ended up calling it a short day. that's when i saw the trd se with the sweet packasport cargo carrier in the lot. that thing looked like it was custom made for the fj.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

Hi Guys-
Just got back from Grand Targhee WY. If you get a chance GO.. If you have a season pass for NorthStar or Sierra they'll give a discount on lift tickets so don't forget to ask about that when you make reservations.

Not much new snow but that place rocks. The high of the week was 24. The snow and coverage was incredible. The one thing that I forgot was how steep the place is.

See Ya at Sierra..

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

The ground is covered in Truckee right now. There is a band of moisture moving in from tonight until Sunday. Weather.com says a couple of feet by Sunday. The question is the snow level, it may be 7k or 6k, they are not sure right now. It is supposed to be a wet one, 2-6 inches of precip by Sunday in the mtns. If it is all snow we could see 3ft+, wishful thinking. I may go up for a ride Saturday or Sunday on the snowmobile. I will let you know what the conditions are.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

Update:
Once again the Sierra's get the shaft! The store lost some of its punch and mostly rained. The snow level was around 7k. Mt Rose has about 4-8" and is expecting some more tonight. It is raining in Truckee. I'm not sure if the snow level will drop tonight or not. There might be a foot of new snow by morning above 7k tomorrow morning. I might try to go up. Good luck to anyone that is going today or this weekend.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

shawn, thanks for the report.

yes, i've been disappointed by the reports coming in, but i guess it's better than no snow at all.

however, skiing/boarding in the rain is a bit dismal in my opinion.

i may have to reconsider my day trip tomorrow.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

Update:
I went snowmobiling monday the 12th. The snow level was high this storm, about 7500 ft. Above that it was actually really good. There was 3'-4' of fresh. The best day I have had this year. I'm not sure what the resorts ended up getting, but its not bad for such a late start. There is another storm moving in this week, weds and thurs night. It is supposed to drop up to 2' in the sierras by Thursday night. I'm supposed to go snowmobiling again Friday so I will let you know.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

awesome info shawn...thanks! i was talking to some dude who said the last storm saved their snowmobile rental business.

i hit northstar for two days. basically everything up high was in decent shape, but it got progressively worse as you approached the base lodge. some runs still had dirt and twigs sticking out, but the groomed runs were decent.

most of the backside was fine. drifter was in bad shape though...highly recommend taking comstock to the top. the rapids was navigable, but you'll find yourself whiddling twigs on the way down. village run and a couple approaches to arrow express had slushy spots.

i heard heavenly and sierra got good snow, but were way too crowded. northstar wasn't crowded at all.

more snow this week would be very nice.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

The storm coming in today has been downgraded, to only 8"-15" above 7k. Bummer. It says that 4"-8" at lake level with the west shore getting the most. Winter storm watch has been cancelled, but snow advisory until 4pm today. I guess we will see what actually happens....

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

It has been dumping in the mtns! Most resorts have 4+ ft of the white stuff in the last 2 days. I know a guy that lives in Kingvale and he has gotten 82" in the past week. I was up snowmobiling north of Truckee on Friday and it was awesome. Above 7500 ft there was 4 ft of fresh snow. And it was light, not typical sierra snow. Sunday I went to Mt Rose and it was a white out all day. Snow up past my waist. I snowboard and everytime I did a toe side turn down the hill I was covered in snow. I went through two different goggles. It was awesome gut the visiblilty sucked and it was really windy. I was gonna go this morning after work, but the road was closed for avy control. I am heading up in the morning for sure. I think winter is finally here.
