Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

i'm taking thenookie's lead and establishing norcal's ski/snowboard thread.

let's use this thread to coordinate snow meets and to report on slope conditions. yes, we need more snow, but...

i'll go first. went up to northstar last weekend for some boardin'. groomed runs were fine, whereas others were either icy or showing bare patches.

most of mt. pluto was fine, but i found a lot of icy patches and tops of rocks poking through on cascades on my way to the comstock express lift. the plunge and springboard looked iffy. the chute was fine as was tonni's, but tonni's had a little ice up top.

northwest territory was nice and consistent throughout. even enjoyed some berm bustin' down on lower pioneer. suh-weeet!

the backside was 50/50. forget about the rapids. top half was fine for you mogulites, but the rest was twigs and branches. you could still get through it though...with a bushwacker machete. the best runs for me were iron horse, sierra grande, challenger, and everything on the bottom half. burnout was pretty icy up top and i couldn't catch an edge.

i didn't hit lookout mountain to report on it. sohwwy.

parks/pipes were fine. they had the super pipe open on sunday. i'm more of a freerider, so i bypassed the traffic jam at the terrain park.

the joint wasn't crowded at all, much like the previous 3-day weekend at sugar bowl. i enjoyed the lack of congested runs thoroughly.

at last report, they had 2 ft. at mid-mountain and 4 at the peak. with highs in the mid-upper 40s, they've got to be struggling.

next...

I'm old school and use 2 boards and stiff boots... Does anyone ski anymore? Neverget to the snow enough so I'll watch this thread and see if I can make a trip work. I'm hoping this weekend brings a little snow. Sounds like marginal conditions at best.

I like going to Sugarbowl for the quick day trip. Shortest drive and no concernsof getting trapped ove the summit by a storm.

Think Snow!!

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

i agree snoutdog. i always hit sugar bowl for those quick day trips. depending on how much snow falls over the next 2-3 days, I may plan a day trip next weekend.

also, there are still plenty of two plankers around. i usually plan at least one group outing with my coed softball team every year and they all ski except for one other guy. i even got outvoted to hit alpine on our trip last season.

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

I hit the Sierras from the East side. The snow sucks right now. Ice, Ice baby. I ride from Reno. I have a pass at Mt rose this year. I haven't even been up yet. I did a couple of back country trips but that was after the last dump, about 4 weeks ago. Lame so far. I'm hoping Feb turns around. I snowmobile mostly. I haven't even done that for 2 weeks. I'm gonna hit Rose when it snows again. Too many rocks showing now. I heard alpine was ok for the conditions last week. I like Sugar bowl too. I heard that Kirkwood wasn't too bad either. I did both of my back country trips out that way near hope valley.

Pray for snow!

Re: Official Norcal FJ Skiers/Snowboarders Unite

yeah, i was kind of antsy to try out my new snowboard so i just had to go up a couple weekends ago despite the conditions. it really wasn't too bad, but i did glide over a few rock tops on a couple runs. yuck.

and as shawn mentioned, the presence of ice, ice baby was encountered on some other runs. funny, in hindsight that's what probably drove us to do the vanilla ice karaoke competition back at the cabin.
