BMW bike upgraded

Well I had a project to ugrade a bike that was given to me by my father. The bike is a BMW Q4.S mountain bike which is foldable via quick release at the base of the seat cross bars. It was a novel idea, so I decided to make the components on it a bit better. I added FSA K- force riser bar and stem, FSA DH pig headset, Cane creek bar ends, Manitou platinum Skareb fork with lock out, full Shimano XT component through out XTR cassette, and Mavic Crossmax XL tires with a Continental UST vertical pro tire. Cost a pretty penny but here are the pics, it rides super smooth, and it shifts like butter. The best bike I have ever owned.

If it didn't have heated seats I wouldn't have bought it.

Very nice bike. I'll say you tricked it out with components! How much does it weigh?

This is my favorite forum on mt. bikes: Mtbr.com Forums - Powered by vBulletin I am on that one as seabirdman too.

Re: BMW bike upgraded

Thanks, it is a bit heavy at around 27.5 lbs. The frame is nice but definitely not that lightweight. However, the thing is bullet proof. BMW partnered with montague when they made it. Montague had a military contract to make folding bikes that could be air dropped for the military (strength over weight). The components definitely set me back a bit, but buyer's remorse fades when the chain clicks down the gears.

27.5 is great. I have brandy new GF HiFi Deluxe and it weighs in at 27 even. I like what you did with this bike and the components you chose are simply excellent. Check out the HiFi - I so impressed with this bike and it rides like a dream. I can't quite see how the BMW bike folds. If I could trouble you a picture of that, I would be much obliged.

Re: BMW bike upgraded

Here is a step by step of the folding mechanism. First undo the quick release at the base of the seat post. There is a safety mechanism that prevents it from collapsing into itself, which also adds strength to the junction. next you can remove the front tire, it is possible to do with the tire on, but it will decrease in size further with it off. Finally remove the seat for further decrease in size. With the tire on it decreases approximately 1/3 without the tire it is significantly smaller almost 1/2 the size.

Re: BMW bike upgraded

That's pretty cool. I usually see folding bikes that fold in half nopt like yours which is kind of like a pocket knife. Can you fit it in the cargo area of your FJ folded?
