Re: This is why you don't shoot a moose in front of you
I forgot to address the lethality of the arrow.
Most non-shooters/hunters have a biased view of the lethality of bow/arrows. I think it probably comes from TV where you always see the arrow "stuck" in the person that was shot and they die a slow, painfull, dramatic death. That is definitely not reallity. Modern bows can shoot an arrow up to 400 feet per second. When that arrow hits something as large as a bear, moose, or elk and it does not hit a thick bone (like shoulder, spine, skull) it will pass completely through the body cavity. Think about that...something pactically the size and weight of a yardstick, tipped with multiple razor blades, zipping through a 1500 pound creature and barely slowing down...this is not your 19th century native american arrow! Some may ask why it is prefered to go completely through the body? Simply put, it is more lethal that way, two holes are better than one. It also makes tracking easier if necessary. Graphic but impressive.
I have witnessed many wounds on both humans and animals and I will tell you that there are definitely some bullets out there that I would much rather be shot with than any modern arrow...not that either is a wonderful option. Surmise to say, that modern arrows, properly placed, are just as lethal in a hunting situation, as modern bullets.

Thanks for giving us the straight info on hunting a moose with a bow. If I had any more rep I would give you some. Maybe tomorrow when my rep ban lifts.
Re: This is why you don't shoot a moose in front of you
My question would be, because of the less-than-ideal shot, were they able to find the animal and make use of the meat etc ?
My belief in hunting is that unless you have the right kill shot, you shouldn't fire the weapon/release the bow. Personally, I don't have the patience to wait for the right shot (so I don't bother wasting my time hunting any more) and, based on living in a community with many hunters, I know that most hunters don't have adequate patience either. We've found several deer in our woods in the past that were injured by impatient fools and I'm constantly hearing stories about the big deer that became startled and started to run just as the hunter was about to fire . . . so what does the hunter do ? . . . they usually just start firing rapidly at the animal's a$$-end.

Hunter's name is Dwight Schuh, editor of Bowhunting magazine. And yes, It's chopped up into steak and burger now. If you would like to watch the whole hunt, and maybe even learn something, it is featured on the Outdoor channel.

We believe you. Somehow short videos like this just lead into other directions. The big question though is . . . .did the guy have to change his pants after that incident ?

WOW !! I am not a hunter and dont't pretent to be but WOW was that guy close to that big old mooses with that little bow.. Man that took some balls !! I could not believe that that "little" bow took out that big moose...
That dude has got big balls!!!
Re: This is why you don't shoot a moose in front of you
Dwight Schuh has more bowhunting experience than 99.9999% of all hunters and would never have released the arrow if he didn't think it was a kill shot. We're not talking about someone who picks up a bow once a year and lucks into a trophy bull then shoots it with a pointy stick after fumbling about blindly in the woods, the man's a professional hunter.
Nature may appear to be cute and cuddly when it's animated on TV but the reality is that coyotes, bears and mountain lions deal out death in a more viscious manner than any hunter ever will. Darn citidiots.

Guys, please realize that for every jerk hunter out there, there is probably 10 responsible hunters. There was nothing in that video that suggested he was shooting that animal for the heck of it. Yes it did run away, but if you've ever hunted with a bow, you know that almost every animal will run X distance and die. Most rifle kills are the same.
Try to relate this to the offroaders who do not the meaning of "Tread Lightly". Many blanket statements are made as a result of them but for the majority, it just isn't true.
Very well put... I was about to post the same thing. I've tracked deer for several hundred yards after a clean hit. The adrenaline keeps them going before they finally fall.
Very true with the idea of the image off-roaders as well.
