Wow....I didn't know such a thing was done around here. I wish I were more fit to even learn this. I'd love to video tape your adventure. Maybe by 2009, I will lose the spare tire.

Have fun and be safe.
Start learning now! The libraries will typically have climbing books on knots and gear. Ask us questions and so on. Being in decent shape is what you need initially so do some "parallel processing" and pick up some skills as you gradually lose weight. Sign up for the February class. There is no climbing involved and it is loads of fun.

Re: Canyoneering in SoCal

Very cool Guys! I did a little repealing when I was a kid don't remember much but it was alway super cool the first time was a little scary when you leaned back off the top of the cliff/rock. Tallest one I did was like 80'. The first time out we learned to make are own harness and then we used it.

Wish I had the time to go to one of the class'.

Re: Canyoneering in SoCal

If we get a little more snow on Mt. Baldy then we can also look at playing mountaineers over there. I went up only as far as 8K' on Sunday, starting from San Antonio Falls at 6k'. Lots of snow then and the trail was already stamped out although I was hoping to use my snowshoes. The ridge route may be doable if there is no ice to worry about or if you have crampons and an ice axe.

Sunday was a little burly with winds up to 25 MPH and wind chill down to 12 degrees F.

You can check the temps and webcams here

Welcome to Mt. Baldy

just deduct 3.5 deg for each 1000 feet up. Right now it is 14 degrees at the notch at 7800 feet so that means the top at 10K' is maybe 7 degrees.

BUMPING this one......

Lot's of water flow in the mountains so the canyons should be in good shape now or very soon with the debris washed out.

Re: Canyoneering in SoCal

I would love to join in. I have quite a bit of rock climbing experience and I have ropes, nuts, chalks, friends, harnesses, helmet, etc. My canyoneering experience is limited to hiking and the scrambeling involved in rock climbing approaches as well as rapelling and decents. My nature is to be more driven by the challenge of getting to the top than to the bottom. However, this canyoneering looks like a great way to see places you would not otherwise have the opportunity to see.

I will be watching for the time and place

Re: Canyoneering in SoCal

Time to BUMP this thread!

In July I am going into Zion for either Subway (pix in previous post) or Pine Creek

and want to be at ease so practice-practice-practice is in order.

Let's start with a session at Stoney Point and then follow up on another weekend to SuperCloud Canyon near Mount Disappointment

Canyonrat, LBCAFJ, Jeshua, FJ-Ollie???

Re: Canyoneering in SoCal

You will have a great time in Zion, I want to go back again but have more then a day like I did last time.

I am not quit in the right shape for this yet, but I am getting there, been busting my butt at the gym trying to get in better shape.

I hope the others can get out there with you, I wish I could but I don't have the gear and would need to take a refresher course its been so long.
